In a disturbing turn of events, the Thiru-vi-ka Nagar all-women police team apprehended six individuals, including three minors, accused of sexually assaulting three girls aged under 17. The arrested individuals include Kalimullaha alias Ali (21), Syed Mohammed Jaffer (22), Abishek Antony (19), and three juveniles, all of whom reportedly have previous criminal records. This case comes to light shortly after the Tamil Nadu government introduced two significant bills aimed at enhancing protection for women in response to persistent sexual crimes in the state.

The incident began when a 32-year-old woman filed a missing person report with local police after her 12-year-old daughter failed to return home after telling her parents she was attending a friend’s function. Concerned for their daughter’s safety, the girl’s parents lodged a complaint. Utilising mobile tower signals, the police tracked one of the girls’ phones and located them in an abandoned library building in Venus Nagar. Reports indicate that the girls were initially taken to various locations, including Avadi and Ambattur, before being brought to the library.

According to police statements, the group of boys lured the girls to a park in Perambur, where they consumed alcohol, allegedly forcing the minors to drink as well. While it remains unclear if all six suspects assaulted the girls, investigations suggest that some of the accused raped the minors while others stood guard outside the library. Following the rescue operation, the traumatized girls were taken to a government home for medical examinations before being returned to their families.

The alarming behaviour of the perpetrators is highlighted by the fact that Abishek, an ITI first-year student, and Kalimullaha, who has faced 11 criminal cases, were among those involved in this latest incident. The alarming trend has incited criticism from political leaders, including AIADMK general secretary Edapadi K Palaniswami, who lambasted the current DMK government for its inability to curb escalating crimes against women. He emphasized the need for stringent legal measures to deter would-be offenders.

The spate of sexual assaults in Tamil Nadu doesn’t end there. In Thanjavur district, police recently arrested 41-year-old mason Sakthivel under the POCSO Act after he was accused of sexually assaulting four girls under 14 years old. This arrest was triggered by a school awareness campaign where the girls disclosed their experiences.

Furthermore, in Tirunelveli district, police apprehended a railway guard, Subhash (37), and a state transport corporation driver, Murugesan (37), for the sexual assault of a 29-year-old woman. The incident occurred when Subhash invited the woman to his home while his family was away; he and his friend allegedly took advantage of her following their consumption of alcohol.

In a separate but equally shocking case, police arrested a TNSTC bus driver for allegedly sexually assaulting a minor scheduled caste girl, with another involved police constable still at large. Reports have also emerged on social media, detailing another incident where 43 children were allegedly sexually assaulted by a teacher at a government school in Thanjavur, raising suspicions about the effectiveness of administrative oversight.

Recent weeks have also seen police actions against sexual predators in various roles, such as a 54-year-old school teacher arrested for harassing a student and a couple facing charges for forcing their daughter into prostitution. The girl, exploited for financial gain, reported being coerced into the sex trade, with law enforcement seizing numerous incriminating materials, including hidden camera footage of other minors.

Another shocking arrest was made when police detained a woman, Vinodhini, accused of abducting and sexually assaulting a 17-year-old boy. She was discovered at a relative’s house, leading to further discussions about the prevailing issues of consent and exploitation in the state.

Police arrested second grade police constable Ilavarasan worked at Vengamedu  on charges of giving sexual harassment to a16 years old plus one student.  He is a bachelor.  The arrested constable was earlier booked for attacking a Sub inspector of police and was suspended.  Rejoined duty recently.
