Guwahati: A madrassa in Bongaigaon district was sealed by the administration after complaints were filed about the molestation of girl students by the Maulvis.

The district administration has sealed the private madrasa and sent all 148 minor girl students back to their families. The action was taken days after the parents and locals staged a protest against alleged molestation of female students by teachers in the madrassa.

As per report, the whole thing began at Ishwaatul Uloom Madrasatul Banat, located at Malegarh under Jogighopa police station in Bongaigaon district, after residents of the vicinity accused a teacher identified as Aminul Islam of sexually abusing a girl student. The allegations angered local residents, people gathered in front of the madrassa and staged a protest against the molestation and some of whom allegedly vandalised the properties of the madrassa.

Police were informed and a team led by Superintendent of Police, Bongaigaon district, Numal Mahatta reached the madrasa to bring the situation under control. An Executive Magistrate accompanied the police during the visit to oversee the process and help restore calm in the area.

Officials said that the news spread quickly and the parents of the students rushed to the madrasa to take their daughters home. All 148 minor girls studying at the institution have been sent back home with their parents by the police administration.

Meanwhile, the district administration carried out a preliminary inquiry into the functioning of the madrasa. The inquiry reportedly found that the privately run institution was not following government regulations. Based on these findings, authorities decided to seal the madrasa until further orders.

SP Mahatta confirmed that a case has been registered under Sexual Offence Act and POCSO act after receiving a formal complaint by the parent of the victim. The accused teacher, Maulavi Aminul Islam was arrested by police and further investigations are going on.

Police said their investigation into the allegations against the teacher is still ongoing. So far, the administration has not made public the exact nature of the regulatory violations uncovered during the preliminary inquiry. The madrassa has no CCTv surveillance in the premises, police said.

Authorities have assured that further action will be taken once the investigation is complete and all facts related to the case are established.
