Maha Kumbh 2025, heralded as the world’s largest human congregation, is redefining the standards of spiritual gatherings. This time it promises a harmonious blend of Bharat’s ancient traditions with modern technological advancements. To delve into the intricate details of the preparations, Organiser Editor Prafulla Ketkar spoke to Amrit Abhijat, Principal Secretary of Urban Development, Uttar Pradesh, and Shantanu Gupta, author and political analyst, who shared their insights in a special discussion. Their conversation offered a glimpse into the scale, vision, and inclusivity of this historic event. Excerpts
Maha Kumbh 2025 is witnessing investments like never before. On the spiritual economy of Maha Kumbh, Amrit Abhijat highlights the staggering allocation of approximately Rs 14,000 crores, with the Uttar Pradesh Government and the Central Government contributing Rs 7,000 crores each. This budget is not just for temporary setups but largely focused on permanent infrastructure development. “Seventy-five per cent of the investment will result in long-term assets that will benefit the people of Prayagraj for decades,” Abhijat further says.
Organising this type of mega spiritual gathering where millions of people visit requires huge logistics. Speaking on this, Amrit Abhijat says that these investments encompass multiple facets, including transportation, water management, sanitation, and city beautification. The Prayagraj airport has been expanded, new highways and bridges have been constructed, and a digital museum has been established to narrate the story of this sacred gathering. The city has also added Shivalik Park, which attracts over 15,000 visitors daily, and the iconic ’84 Pillars of Faith,’ representing the 84 lakh life cycles in Hindu philosophy, further enhancing Prayagraj’s cultural and spiritual appeal.
Technological Marvels for Seamless Management
For Maha Kumbh 2025, technology is playing a central role in ensuring a smooth experience for millions of pilgrims. Abhijat elaborates on the deployment of Artificial Intelligence in crowd management, traffic control, and waste management. “From facial recognition systems to AI-enabled garbage monitoring, we are setting a new benchmark in large-scale event management,” he explains.
Drones, both aerial and underwater, have been deployed to monitor security and detect potential threats. Real-time tracking systems for vehicles and pedestrian movement are in place to avoid congestion, and QR codes will streamline the maintenance of sanitation facilities. The administration has also collaborated with Google Maps to provide accurate navigation for pilgrims, even in areas where the riverbanks have recently shifted. Inclusivity is a cornerstone of this Maha Kumbh. Shantanu Gupta applauds the Government’s efforts to ensure that every section of society feels included. “Special facilities have been created for akharas and sadhus, as their presence is the spiritual backbone of the Kumbh. Meanwhile, free lodging and meals are being provided to thousands of pilgrims daily,” he says.
Local communities that have historically been a part of the Kumbh tradition are also playing a vital role. From craftsmen and artisans to local vendors, everyone has been integrated into the larger vision of Maha Kumbh 2025. “This inclusivity strengthens the cultural fabric and ensures that every stakeholder contributes to and benefits from the event,” adds Gupta. This time, Maha Kumbh is setting a benchmark in sustainability, aiming to be a “Green Kumbh.” Single-use plastics have been banned, and alternatives like jute and cloth bags are being promoted. The administration has also established over 1.5 lakh eco-friendly toilets and advanced sewage treatment plants to manage waste efficiently.
Abhijat highlights the efforts to maintain cleanliness, a hallmark of the 2019 Kumbh. “We are taking cleanliness to the next level with modern interventions. Prefabricated sewage treatment plants (STPs) and scientific waste disposal methods are in place to ensure that the event leaves no environmental footprint.” Moreover, a zero-plastic policy has been strictly enforced, and local traders have been encouraged to adopt sustainable practices. “Clean Kumbh, Green Kumbh, and a Secure Kumbh—this is our mantra,” Abhijat emphasises.
Festival Economy in Action
Maha Kumbh is not just a spiritual event but also a significant economic driver. According to Abhijat, the Kumbh generates substantial economic activity, benefiting millions across various sectors. “From garland sellers to food vendors and transport operators, everyone stands to gain. We estimate an economic activity of around “2 lakh crores during the Maha Kumbh,” he reveals.
Shantanu Gupta elaborates on the concept of “temple economy,” explaining how religious tourism contributes to the local and regional economy. “In Ayodhya alone, the annual footfall has surged to over 16 crores, generating an economy of “50,000 to “80,000 crores. Similarly, the Kumbh is a smart investment that not only nurtures spirituality but also uplifts livelihoods,” he says.
Not only this, over 50,000 security personnel, supported by advanced technologies like drones and biometric attendance systems, have been deployed.
Gupta emphasises on the spiritual significance of Kumbh and adds, “This is not just a festival; it is a testament to Bharat’s timeless cultural and spiritual heritage. The gathering of akharas, sadhus, and devotees transcends all boundaries, showcasing unity in diversity.”
He further highlights the role of Maha Kumbh in promoting national integration. “The event breaks down barriers—be it regional, linguistic, or social. People from all walks of life come together, driven by faith and a shared sense of purpose.”
