Narayanpur/Bijapur: Two Border Security Force (BSF) personnel sustained injuries after an improvised explosive device (IED) planted by Maoists exploded in Chhattisgarh’s Narayanpur district on Friday, January 17 police said.

The blast occurred when a Road-Opening Party (ROP) was being deployed up between Camp Garpa and Garpa village, added the police official.

The injured personnel were immediately rushed to the nearby healthcare facilities and are being treated. More details about the incident are still awaited.

The incident took place on the heels of another IED blast near Putkel village under the Basaguda police station in Bijapur district on Thursday morning, injuring two Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel.

The injured personnel were evacuated and subsequently airlifted to Raipur where they are being treated at a private hospital. Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sharma on Friday paid a visit to the personnel injured in Putkel IED attack and enquired about their well-being. Both the injured jawans are reported to be out of danger.

Major operation underway in south Bastar

This comes amid security forces intensifying their anti-Maoist operations in south Bastar region. Around two thousands personnel from separate units of CRPF, its elite jungle warfare unit CoBRA and specialised counter-insurgency units of Chhattisgarh police launched a major operation in the south Bastar area, a core insurgency zone on Thursday.

A gunfight broke out between the joint team of security forces and the Maoists on Thursday morning at around 9 am. Intermittent firing at the site lasted till late evening, resulting in killing of a dozen Maoist.

It is being reported that a large number of Maoists belonging to the People Liberation Guerrilla Army (PLGA) battalion no 1, the strongest formation of the outlawed group were surrounded by the teams of security forces.

According to the preliminary information, bodies of as many as 12 Maoists were so far recovered and being brought up to the Podampalli camp. An extensive search operation is being carried out in the vicinity of the site. The tally of Maoists killed in the gunfight is expected to increase further.

Praising the campaign of the security forces, Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai in an official statement said that this is a big achievement for the police and we are determined to eradicate the darkness of Maoism and spread the light of peace and development in the state.

Over two dozen Maoist were killed in separate operations launched by the forces in Bastar division in January this year, marking a continuation of major offensive launched by the forces in core Maoist zones of state in 2024, which resulted in neutralisation of around 250 Maoist cadres.
