The Uttar Pradesh government, through an official notification issued by the Prayagraj District Magistrate Ravindra Kumar Mandal, has announced the creation of the Maha Kumbh Mela District. This new administrative region is being set up to ensure better governance and management of the upcoming Maha Kumbh Mela 2025, a globally renowned religious event that draws millions of pilgrims annually. Officially named Mahakumbh Mela District, it becomes the state’s 76th district, replacing the earlier tally of 75.

The decision, announced on November 29, is designed to ensure seamless organisation and management of one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, set to commence on January 13, 2025, and run until February 26, 2025. Officials emphasised that the establishment of this new district reflects the government’s commitment to providing a better experience for millions of pilgrims and stakeholders.

The Mahakumbh Mela District encompasses the revenue villages and parade areas described in Annexure-I of the official notification. The Mela Adhikari (Fair Officer) will hold the powers of a District Magistrate, Executive Magistrate, and Additional District Magistrate as per Section 14(1) of the Indian Civil Defense Code, 2023. The officer will also have powers equivalent to that of a Collector under the Uttar Pradesh Revenue Code, 2006, amended by the UP Revenue Code (Amendment) Act, 2016. The administration will appoint an Additional Collector to assist in governance during the fair.

These changes aim to ensure better coordination among various departments, facilitate quick decision-making, and enhance resource allocation during the event.

The Uttar Pradesh government plans to promote Mahakumbh Mela 2025 extensively, with ministers personally inviting governors and chief ministers across India. Additionally, roadshows and events will be held both domestically and internationally to attract global devotees.

The Maha Kumbh Mela occurs every 12 years, and is the largest congregation of faith in the world. Devotees gather at the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers in Prayagraj to take a holy dip believed to cleanse sins and lead to salvation.

With preparations in full swing, the Uttar Pradesh government is also promoting the event through international roadshows and invitations to all state governors and chief ministers across India, further amplifying its global appeal.

This year’s event is expected to surpass all previous editions, with meticulous planning, upgraded infrastructure, and enhanced facilities ensuring a smooth experience for visitors.
