On October 23, we honour the brave hearts of the 13 Kumaon Regiment, who etched an unparalleled chapter of bravery in India’s military history. The Battle of Rezang La, fought on November 18, 1962, in the freezing heights of Ladakh, stands as a symbol of immense courage and sacrifice. It was during the Sino-Indian War, and while many Indian soldiers had fought bravely, the action at Rezang La remains an extraordinary tale of heroism.

Led by Major Shaitan Singh, a small contingent of 120 soldiers, most hailed from Haryana’s Ahirwal region, found themselves defending the isolated outpost of Rezang La against overwhelming Chinese forces. Despite being heavily outnumbered, the soldiers of the 13 Kumaon Regiment held their ground, fighting with unyielding spirit and determination. Leading from the front, Major Shaitan Singh exemplified leadership and bravery, inspiring his men to fight till their last breath.

Out of the 120 soldiers, 114 were martyred, but their resistance inflicted heavy casualties on the Chinese troops. It was a battle not just for land but for honour, with each soldier displaying exemplary dedication to the nation. The sacrifice of these brave souls saved Ladakh from a potential incursion, demonstrating India’s fierce will to protect its sovereignty.

Major Shaitan Singh’s gallant leadership earned him the Param Vir Chakra posthumously, India’s highest military honour. His courage and the indomitable spirit of his soldiers made Rezang La a beacon of Indian military history, reminding the nation of the deep sense of duty and sacrifice that soldiers embody.

As we remember these brave warriors on October 23, it is not just their heroism that stands out, but the values they upheld—duty, honour, and an unshakeable resolve to protect the motherland. The Battle of Rezang La is not just a story of resistance but a lesson in fortitude that continues to inspire generations of Indians.

On this day, let us express our deepest gratitude to the heroes of Rezang La. Their bravery and sacrifice remind us of the price of freedom and our immense responsibility to honour and safeguard it. We owe them our respect, our remembrance, and our eternal gratitude.
