RANCHI: Security forces on Wednesday, October 9 have neutralised two Maoists in an encounter in insurgency-hit Chatra district of Jharkhand. The gunfight between the forces and the extremists broke out, when a joint team of security personnel were out on a combing operation under Jori police station limits.

According to reports, the encounter took place in Ganiyotri forest area on Wednesday evening, resulting in losses for Tritiya Sammellan Prastuti Committte (TSPC), a splinter group of the Maoist Communist Centre of India (MCCI) now CPI (Maoist).

The operation was launched after the local police received credible inputs of presence of TSPC’s cadres in the said locality, following which a joint team of security personnel were dispatched for search operation.

Upon reaching the spot, the security team came under heavy firing from the armed cadres of the TSPC group, to which the forces retaliated heavily, leading to neutralisation of two Maoist cadres.

Following the exchange of fire, the security team conducted a thorough search in the vicinity of the site, recovering bodies of two male Maoists alongside an AK-47 rifle. The deceased have been identified as Harendra Ganjhu, sub zonal commander and Ishwar, both active cadres of the TSPC. A search operation in the area is being conducted on Thursday as well.

Tritiye Sammelan Prastuti Committee

Founded in 2002 after splitting from MCCI, which later merged with the People’s War Group to form CPI Maoist, TSPC is a Maoist outfit, functional mainly in the state of Jharkhand.

The members of the group have been involved in various illegal activities in the state such as levy extortion, disrupting development projects and unleashing violence against innocent civilians. Recently, armed cadres of the group had executed a father and his son in Chatra district itself in May this year.

The tragic incident unfolded on May 25, when dozens of armed cadres of TSPC barged into the house of a tribal man in Hindiya Kala village under the Kunda police station limits and executed him along with his son.

Continuous operations against the Maoists

Notably, of late the security forces have achieved commendable success in containing the Maoist insurgency in the state of Jharkhand, confining the extremists in small pockets of a few districts only. This comes after the forces launched a series of operations in Budha Pahad, Parasnath Pahadi and other adjoining areas, earlier identified as Maoist stronghold.

In a similar operation launched in June this year, security forces had gunned down four hard core cadres of the proscribed CPI (Maoist) in an encounter in Chaibasa of Jharkhand. The encounter took place near the forest area of Lipunga under Gua police station limits of West Singhbhum district, resulting in fatalities for the Maoists.

Those killed in the gun battle were identified as Zonal Commander, Singrai alias Manoj, Sub-Zonal Commander, Kande Honhaga alias Dirshum, Area commander, Surya alias Devgam, and a female cadre Junga Purti alias Marla.
