In a remarkable display of resilience and skill, Indian wrestler Aman Sehrawat secured a bronze medal in the Men’s 57kg Freestyle event at the Paris Olympics, overcoming a previous setback to deliver a dominant performance against Puerto Rico’s Damien Cruz. The bout, which took place on Friday, ended with a decisive score of 13-5 in favor of the Indian grappler, marking a significant achievement for both Sehrawat and India’s wrestling contingent.

Aman’s journey to the podium was not without its challenges. After suffering a crushing 10-0 defeat to Japan’s Higuchi Rei in the semifinals, many wondered how the young wrestler would respond. However, when it mattered most, Aman showcased his fighting spirit and technical prowess, turning the tide in his favor against Cruz.

The match began with both wrestlers displaying aggressive tactics right from the start. Cruz quickly targeted Aman’s legs, pushing him out of bounds to score the first point. However, Aman was undeterred. He swiftly countered with a tackle from behind, earning two points and taking a narrow 2-1 lead. The dynamic exchange of grapples kept spectators on the edge of their seats, as both competitors fought fiercely for dominance.

As the bout progressed, Cruz managed to catch Aman off guard, executing a sweep that earned him two points and briefly shifted the momentum. Yet, Aman’s determination shone through as he quickly regained control, ending the first half with a slim 4-3 lead.

The second half saw Aman ramp up his aggression, employing quick footwork and strategic maneuvers to outsmart Cruz. Despite Cruz’s relentless efforts to close the gap, Aman continued to extend his lead, showcasing his superior technique and stamina. With just over a minute remaining, Aman had established a commanding 10-5 advantage, demonstrating his ability to adapt and overcome adversity.

In the final moments of the match, Aman locked in on Cruz, pinning him down with ease and further widening the score. The bout concluded with a final score of 13-5, solidifying Aman Sehrawat’s place on the podium and adding to India’s growing medal tally at the Olympics, which now stands at six medals—five bronze and one silver.

Aman’s path to the bronze medal was paved with impressive victories leading up to the final bout. He had previously outclassed North Macedonian wrestler Vladimir Egorov in the quarterfinals and showcased his dominance by defeating the fourth-seeded Albanian Zelimkhan Abakarov 12-0 in the quarterfinals. However, the semifinal loss to Higuchi Rei served as a harsh reminder of the fierce competition at the Olympic level.

Despite the setback, Aman’s ability to bounce back and secure a medal speaks volumes about his character and dedication to the sport. His performance not only highlights his individual talent but also reflects the growing prowess of Indian wrestling on the global stage.
