In a disturbing case of suspected honour killing, a 20-year-old man, identified as Haseen, has been arrested for the murder of his 16-year-old sister, Amrisha Bano, in the Meerut district of Uttar Pradesh. The shocking incident, which took place in Nagla Shekhu village within the jurisdiction of the Incholi police station, has gained widespread attention after a video of the crime went viral on social media.

According to local authorities, Haseen, an electrician by profession, became enraged over his sister’s decision to marry a Hindu man of her choice. The victim, Amrisha, had been allegedly involved in a romantic relationship with Mohit, a young Hindu man from a nearby village. The couple had attempted to elope on several occasions, with Amrisha fleeing from her home in March, May, and again in August. Each time, she was subsequently recovered by the police and returned to her family.

On the fateful day of August 7, Amrisha reportedly planned to elope with Mohit once more. Haseen discovered her intentions and confronted her, leading to a violent altercation.

Eyewitnesses at the scene reported that Haseen dragged his sister out of their home and onto the road, where he began to strangle her while shouting that she had dishonoured their family. A bystander recorded the horrific event, which quickly spread online.

He started yelling, “She has ruined my father’s honour. She will even devour him. If I had not killed her, he would have died. She has run away from home three times. What would I have done if I had not killed such a person?” Several men and women were present at the scene, yet none intervened to stop him.

Kamlesh Bahadur, Superintendent of Police for Meerut Rural, commented on the situation, stating, “Amrisha had recently eloped with Mohit, and both were brought back to her family. Due to her minor status, she was handed over to her relatives, while the accused was released after the family chose not to file a complaint, fearing societal repercussions.” Bahadur indicated that the police are treating the case as an honour killing.

According to police reports, Haseen had a history of conflicts with his sister over her relationship with Mohit. Neighbours revealed that an argument between the siblings about Amrisha’s choice of partner occurred earlier in the day. Haseen, reportedly infuriated by the confrontation, followed Amrisha when she fled and assaulted her on the road before strangling her to death.

Haseen, who is the eldest of eight siblings and a father of two, had returned to his home upon learning of his sister’s escape. He was apprehended shortly after the incident, and a First Information Report (FIR) has been filed against him. In his confession, Haseen justified his actions, claiming he acted to preserve the family’s honour and expressing his belief that he had done the right thing by preventing Amrisha from leaving with her Hindu partner.
