Baghpat: Uttar Pradesh Police have arrested a couple, identified as Javed and his wife Washima, following the circulation of a viral video that allegedly showed them making provocative remarks linked to cow slaughter and attempting to incite communal tensions in Baghpat district.

“Hindus, we are chopping and cooking your Gau Mata. Do you wanna eat?” — says Javed & wife Washima in Baghpat, UP.

They openly challenged: “If Hindus have guts, then stop us.”

Police arrested Washima on the spot.

According to the Baghpat Police, the matter came to light after the video surfaced on social media. Authorities initiated an investigation to establish the identity of the individuals, verify the location shown in the footage and determine whether any offence had been committed under state laws governing cow slaughter and provisions related to communal harmony. Police subsequently traced the location to premises in Baghpat and launched an operation to apprehend the suspects. Washima was taken into custody by a team of female police personnel during the raid.

Javed, however, attempted to escape when police reached the location. Police said he opened fire at the pursuing team, prompting personnel to retaliate in self-defence. During the exchange of fire, Javed sustained a bullet injury to his leg. He was subsequently apprehended and taken to a local hospital for medical treatment.

The police have initiated legal proceedings against the couple under multiple provisions. These include relevant sections of the Uttar Pradesh Prevention of Cow Slaughter Act, along with provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) concerning the promotion of enmity between groups, outraging religious feelings and intentional insult with the potential to cause a breach of peace. Additional charges under the Arms Act have also been invoked in connection with the alleged possession and use of an illegal firearm and firing at police personnel.

Authorities have reiterated that strict action will be taken against anyone found attempting to disturb communal harmony or violate laws relating to cattle slaughter and illegal firearms. Both accused have been sent to judicial custody as the investigation continues. The police said further action will be taken based on evidence gathered during the ongoing investigation.
