In a shocking incident reported from Jharkhand capital Ranchi, a police sub-inspector was shot dead by unknown assailants on late Friday night, August 2. The victim has been identified as Anupan Kachhap, a 2018 batch sub-inspector posted at crime branch.

Kachhap’s body was found on Boreya road under the Kanke police station limits of Ranchi with a bullet wound prompting movement of a number of senior officials of police to Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Ranchi, where Kachhap’s body was taken for an autopsy.

The police have initiated a probe into the matter by forming a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by Superintendent of Police (Rural), Sumit Agarwal. Briefing the media over the incident, Superintendent of Police, Ranchi, Chandan Kumar Sinha said that “Last night, Sub-Inspector Anupam Kachhap, who was posted in the Special Branch Headquarters, was shot dead by an unknown assailant. We have taken a statement from his colleague and batchmate, Pawan Kumar”.

“They had gone to a local hotel for dinner. After dinner, others returned towards Kanke, but Sub-Inspector Kachhap went in the other direction. Why he went in that direction and how the events unfolded are being investigated by the SIT. It appears he was shot at point-blank range. The SIT is led by Rural SP Sumit Agarwal, with all key officers assigned to the investigation,” he added.

Kachhap, a resident of Khunti district has joined the police in the year 2018 and was currently posted at Special Branch Headquarters, He was reported to be on leave currently.

The shocking murder of a police sub-inspector in capital has also triggered political reactions from the leaders of opposition who while pointing fingers on the incumbent government has condemn the incident.

Speaking with the media after meeting the family members of the deceased, former Chief Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party leader, Babu Lal Marandi said “It’s a sad incident and the way the miscreant has executed this that too with a personnel of special branch, the culprit should be arrested immediately.”

Later on Marandi in a post on X, slammed the incumbent government over the surge of such incident in the State. No one is safe under the current government, even the police which provides security to the masses is not safe, said Marandi.

“Yesterday a lawyer was murdered 500 meters away from the police station, today a young tribal police inspector has been shot dead, which is extremely sad. Many such incidents are happening every day, since the government is insensitive it is just quietly watching the spectacle. How can the common people except safety in a government in which lawyers and even policemen are being ordered openly?” He added.

Senior lawyer stabbed to death in Madhukam

Notably in a separate incident unfolded on Friday morning a lawyer of the Ranchi civil court was also stabbed to death near Hanuman temple of Madhukam. The deceased was identified as Gopal Krishna.

The incident took place when the deceased had gone for some paper work in a shop near the Hanuman temple when a miscreant attacked him with a knife and injured him badly. Gopal was then rushed to the hospital where the doctors declared him dead.

The incident sparked an outrage among the lawyers who later gave an ultimatum to the police to nab the culprit within three days. The matter is being investigated by a SIT of the police.
