In Madhya Pradesh’s Nagda, a woman who converted to Islam 15 years ago has reverted to the Sanatan fold (Ghar Wapsi) after the court granted her a divorce from her husband, Saddam, who is a history-sheeter and currently behind bars.

According to a report published in Dainik Bhaskar on Monday (July 15), the victim revealed that during her school days, Saddam forced her to convert to Islam and marry him at gunpoint. Following her marriage, she was assaulted whenever she tried to step out of the house or file a police complaint. Recently, a court granted her divorce, and she performed Ghar Wapsi.

The woman’s lawyer, Preeti Shrimal, stated that her client’s husband, Saddam, is a criminal currently in jail. The Civil Court Class 2 in Nagda accepted the woman’s plea and approved the divorce on 16th May 2024. On Monday (15th July), the woman, now named Shivanya, told the media that she had reverted to Hindu Dharma.

Shivanya, 33, recounted that Saddam constantly stalked her during her school days, brandishing a pistol and threatening to kill her mother and brother if she didn’t marry him. Out of fear, she married Saddam and endured oppression for 15 years.

In a video shared by Dainik Bhaskar, Shivanya tearfully explained, “He ruined my reputation,” adding that Saddam’s constant presence in her neighbourhood caused her great distress.

With the help of Advocates Preeti Jaina Shrimal and Deepak Negi, Shivanya’s case was presented in court, resulting in her divorce. The video also highlighted that Shivanya is a mother of two and a resident of Nagda.

Shivanya further detailed the threats she faced from Saddam, who would come with a pistol and threaten to kill her and her brother if she didn’t marry him. She explained that she couldn’t share this information with anyone because Saddam and his family kept her confined and prevented her from filing a complaint.

“Whenever I tried to go to the police station, they would assault me and force me to stay at home. They threatened to kill my mother and brother if I sought help. Now, I am not afraid, as he is behind bars,” Shivanya stated.

Notably, Saddam is a history-sheeter with 24 cases registered against him under serious sections. He is currently lodged in jail.
