Tension prevailed in the Karimnagar district of Telangana on May 25, following an altercation during a religious procession by Hindu devotees. Reports indicate that devotees of Bhagwan Hanuman were conducting the procession near the Hanuman Mandir in Prashant Nagar when an intoxicated man unexpectedly appeared and began threatening them. When the Hindus protested, they were apprehended by the police for allegedly causing an ‘obstruction.’

The man was identified as Jaidev (25), who joined the procession of Hanuman devotees and was seen dancing while wielding a knife.

According to the Three Town police, the situation unfolded at the Mancherial crossroads when an argument arose following an objection from a man of a different community to the rally. The Mancherial police promptly detained him and brought him to the police station. However, during the journey in a patrol car, a devotee grabbed hold of the vehicle, but the driver continued to speed forward as he suspected an attack. After that, they stopped a little further down. To prevent anyone from following, a police officer from Karimnagar got out, and many people surrounded him. The police were seen carrying out a lathi charge on those who had chased after their vehicle. However, the action resulted in heightened tensions between the police and the devotees.

The incident made the Bharatiya Janata Party act quickly. Karimnagar Lok Sabha MP Bandi Sanjay Kumar criticised the Telangana police’s tough actions and demanded that the Hanuman Deeksha Swamis be released right away without any conditions. He also criticised the State Government and accused them.

“Police attacked the men observing deeksha with lathis and used abusive words. An attempt is being made to provoke Hanuman devotees to abuse the police. Men in Hanuman mala would never do that,” Bandi Sanjay claimed.

Strongly condemn the high-handed behaviour of Telangana police against Hanuman Deeksha Swamis at Karimnagar.

We immediately demand unconditional release of the Hanuman Deeksha Swamis who have been arrested.

“Your job is to maintain law and order, not create issues. We will cooperate with you.” He also tagged the Director General of Telangana police and accused, “Instead of protecting Law and order, Karimnagar police are doing lathi-charge on people. Please find out facts and take action against erring officials.”
