As India gears up for the Lok Sabha Elections 2024, the Election Commission (EC) has announced the staggering of voting across seven phases, spanning from April 19 to June 1. With over 1.8 crore first-time voters in the 18-19 age group set to exercise their franchise, the EC has unveiled a detailed guide to assist them in navigating the electoral process.

According to the EC, voting for the 543 Lok Sabha seats will take place in seven phases, culminating in the counting of votes on June 4. To ensure maximum participation from first-time voters, the commission has outlined a step-by-step process for registration and casting of votes.

First-time voters are encouraged to register on the official website of the Election Commission of India (ECI) by completing Form 6 online at the National Voters’ Service Portal. Alternatively, they can enroll offline by submitting the application before the Electoral Registration Officers or Assistant Electoral Registration Officers.

Once registered, voters must verify whether their name has been included in the electoral roll of their constituency. This can be done by contacting the Electoral Registration Officer of their area or checking the ECI website.

On polling day, voters need to visit their designated polling booths and present their identity documents to the First Polling Officer. Subsequently, they will proceed to the Second Polling Officer, who will mark their left forefinger with indelible ink as proof of voting.

Afterward, voters are required to sign or provide their thumb impression in the Register of Voters. Utilising the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM), citizens will press the blue candidate button on the balloting unit against the name and symbol of their chosen candidate. Upon recording the vote, a beep sound will confirm the successful casting, and voters will receive a slip as confirmation.

In the event of any grievance related to the electoral roll or other election matters, voters are encouraged to approach the presiding officer at the polling station for resolution.

The comprehensive guide aims to empower first-time voters by providing them with the necessary information and guidance to participate effectively in the democratic process. Through their active engagement, these young voters play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the nation and upholding the principles of democracy.

As the Lok Sabha Elections 2024 approach, the Election Commission remains committed to facilitating a fair, transparent, and inclusive electoral process, ensuring that every eligible citizen has the opportunity to exercise their fundamental right to vote.
