Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a heartfelt tribute on the 200th birth anniversary of Saint Vallalar, also known as श्री रामलिंग स्वामी जी or Ramalinga Swamigal. In a video address, he expressed his deep respect for the revered saint, highlighting Vallalar’s enduring impact on spirituality and social reform.

The special commemorative event took place in Vadalur, a place closely associated with Vallalar, and drew attention to his remarkable contributions to humanity. PM Modi emphasised Vallalar’s profound belief in compassion and his unwavering commitment to eradicating hunger.

“Saint Vallalar believed that sharing food with the hungry is one of the most noble of all acts of kindness,” Prime Minister Modi remarked. He recited Vallalar’s words, “वाडिय पईरई कंडा पोदेल्लाम, वाडी नेन,” which translate to “Every time I saw crops withering, I withered too.” This philosophy resonated strongly during the COVID-19 pandemic, as India provided free ration to 80 crore citizens in their time of need.

Vallalar’s legacy extended beyond his era, with his teachings transcending the barriers of religion, caste, and creed. He envisioned a society founded on the principles of equality and divine connection, a vision that aligns with the Indian government’s commitment to “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwaas, Sabka Prayaas.”

PM Modi affirmed that Vallalar’s simple yet profound wisdom continues to inspire millions. He further noted that Vallalar’s works are easily accessible and relatable, making his spiritual teachings more accessible to a wider audience.

The Governor of Tamil Nadu presided over the unveiling of a statue of Thiruvarutprakasa Vallalar during the birth anniversary celebrations at Raj Bhavan. The statue, now located in Vallalar Park, symbolizes the enduring impact of the saint’s teachings.

In his address, Governor Ravi emphasized the significance of Vallalar’s contributions to Bharat and the need for society to embrace his legacy. He underlined the unique nature of Bharat as a nation defined by its ancient spiritual heritage, in contrast to Western concepts of a state. Governor Ravi referenced Babasaheb Ambedkar’s framing of India as “Bharat” in the Constitution’s first article, emphasizing the importance of reconnecting with India’s roots.

Governor Ravi delved into the profound teachings of Bharatiya ethos, emphasizing the oneness of creation and the presence of the divine in every element of existence, a concept rooted in the Vedas and Thirukkural. He highlighted the importance of the universal mantra “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,” emphasizing that despite linguistic and regional differences, the core values remain the same.

Continuing his address, Governor Ravi expressed concern about societal impurities and the need to rectify them. He acknowledged the contributions of divine souls such as Rishabhdev, Lord Buddha, and Ramanujacharya, who aimed to eliminate discrimination through their teachings.

The event featured a cultural program showcasing the life and teachings of Saint Vallalar, presented by local artists. Governor Ravi also unveiled a book dedicated to Thiruvarutprakasa Vallalar and honored sculptor Kishor J Nagappa for his work. Union Minister of State for Fisheries and Information and Broadcasting, L. Murugan, along with other dignitaries, participated in the commemoration.

Prime Minister Modi concluded by calling upon the nation to recommit to Vallalar’s ideals of love, kindness, and justice. He urged citizens to ensure that no one goes hungry and that every child receives a quality education, echoing the saint’s enduring message of compassion and social reform.

The commemoration of Saint Vallalar’s 200th birth anniversary serves as a reminder of his timeless teachings and their relevance in shaping a more compassionate and inclusive society.
