A darker side of society stands exposed with a recent case that has come to light from the Ujjain district, also called Mahakal Nagri, of Madhya Pradesh. In the said incident, a video is making the rounds on the internet where a half-naked girl, barely covering her body with a rag, is asking for help from door to door but is shunned away. At the same time, her private organs are bleeding but no one comes to the rescue. It has come to light that not only the minor but her mother was also raped. A case against an unidentified accused has been registered and the minor was admitted to the hospital after she walked almost eight kilometres without any help.

As per the reports, the minor was raped and dumped in the city’s Dandi Ashram. In the viral CCTV footage, the girl is seen walking on the streets with a rag around her upper body. She stops from door to door asking for help but to no avail.

“A girl, aged around 12 years, was found bleeding on a street located under the Mahakal police station area in Ujjain on Monday. She was taken to a hospital, where her initial medical examination confirmed that she had been raped,” Superintendent of Police (SP) Sachin Sharma said.

“The girl is possibly a resident of Uttar Pradesh. She neither possesses any identity card nor is she able to tell her name and address to the police properly,” he said.

“A case has been registered and a special investigation team (SIT) has been formed to identify and catch the culprits at the earliest. The medical examination of the minor confirmed rape,” Sachin Sharma said.

As the minor’s condition was serious, she was taken to Indore on Tuesday for further medical treatment, the SP said. A case was registered at the Mahakal police station and an investigation into the incident is underway, he added.

The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) issued a notice to Ujjain Police over the minor’s rape. The panel sought details of the initial report filed by police and asked them to comply with the guidelines mentioned in the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

NCPCR chairperson Priyank Kanoongo said that the most unfortunate part of the incident was that for so many hours nobody stepped up to help the minor. This reveals a dark side of society, the NCPCR chairperson said.

The incident has sparked political controversy in poll-bound Madhya Pradesh as the Congress has raised questions about the state of law and order.

Madhya Pradesh Congress chief Kamal Nath demanded that the victim be given financial assistance of Rs 1 crore and that the accused in the case be given the strictest possible punishment.

“It is heart-wrenching to see the case of the extremely cruel rape of a little girl in Ujjain. The kind of heinous crime committed against the 12-year-old daughter and the way she ran around in many areas of the city in a semi-nude condition and before falling unconscious on the road, puts humanity to shame,” Nath said on his official X account.
