Nepalese Foreign Minister Narayan Prakash Saud, on September 6, 2023, asserted that the Himalayan nation of Nepal is fortunate to have a neighbour like India who has contributed to the development of Nepal and its people. He further said that he looked forward to continued support from India in Nepal’s development.

The Inauguration

These remarks carry significance after the Chinese envoy to Nepal pulled up India’s Nepal Policy. Saud made the remarks while inaugurating the campus of the Himalaya Kiran Campus, Khandbari Municipality, Sankhuwasabha, built with the government of India’s financial assistance. He jointly inaugurated the project along with Naveen Shrivastava, the Ambassador of India to Nepal.

The political leaders from Sankhuwasabha, social workers and officials from the Nepal government and representatives of the campus and local communities were present. Saud said that this development project will be very helpful for Nepali students, and generations of them will receive good quality education.

All About Himalaya Kiran Campus

The Project was implemented under Nepal-Bharat Developmental cooperations and as a High-Impact immunity Community Project (HICP) under an agreement between the Government of India and the Government of Nepal at the cost of 37.40 million rupees.

The scope of the work included the construction of a triple-storied campus building with classrooms, science labs, computer labs, library rooms and meeting hall. The District Coordination Committee of Sankhuwasabha was the implementing agency for the project.

Srivastava highlighted that this project is an important part of the very robust development partnership between India and Nepal, which has made significant strides in recent years, spanning various priority sectors of the Government of Nepal and its people. He expressed the continued commitment of the Government of India to continue to bolster the development partnership as per the priorities of the Government of Nepal for the benefit of the people of both countries.

The Himalaya Kiran campus was established in 1949 as Himalaya Middle School. In 2005, the school was upgraded to conduct degree courses by naming it as Himalaya Kiran Public Campus. This campus has the strength of more than 600 students, of which 60 per cent are girls.

This campus is offering the courses of Bachelor in Management and Education and Masters in Education programmes at present. Since its inception, the college has achieved remarkable success in terms of quality education.

Other Projects

Since 2003, India has taken up nearly 550 High Impact Community Development Projects in Nepal, of which 483 projects have been completed. Amongst these, 84 Projects are in Koshi Province, spanning various sectors.

In addition to these, the Government of India has gifted 974 ambulances and 234 school buses to various hospitals, health posts and educational institutions in Nepal on the occasion of Independence Day and Republic Day of India. Among these, there are 13 ambulances and three School Buses in Sankhuwasabha
