In order to witness this historic moment, more than eight million were hooked to the official YouTube channel of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

It’s breaking record already, More than 8 million plus people tuned in to witness the soft landing of #Chandrayaan3 on ISRO’s official YouTube channel.

This achievement marks the highest-ever live viewership on a YouTube channel stream, surpassing the previous record of 6.1 million viewers set during the Brazil vs. Croatia match.

Meanwhile,  it was sharp at 6:04p.m that history was created when the ISRO chief announced that India is on the moon.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday hailed the Chandrayaan 3 mission creating history by achieving soft-landing on the lunar surface and said “India is now on the moon”.

The Prime Minister congratulated ISRO scientists for the success of the Chandrayaan 3 mission.“Historic day for India’s space sector. Congratulations to @isro for the remarkable success of Chandrayaan 3 lunar mission,” PM Modi said on X, earlier known as Twitter.

People all over the country celebrated the historic occasion.

Officials at India’s space agency ISRO headquarters in Bengaluru broke into applause after the Vikram began its powered vertical descent towards its landing site.

With this India has become the fourth country- after the US, China and Russia – to have successfully landed on the moon’s surface, it has earned a place in record books as the first to touchdown on the south side of Earth’s only natural satellite.

India’s success in landing the spacecraft on the Moon’s south pole comes days after a Russian probe Luna-25 crashed in the same region. Chandrayaan 3 spacecraft put down the Vikram lander on the lunar surface, descending and tilted to a horizontal position ahead of landing.

On August 5, Chandrayaan 3 was successfully inserted into the lunar orbit with multiple key manoeuvres thereafter. Then on August 17, the mission marked another giant leap in its lunar quest as the ‘Vikram’ lander module of the spacecraft successfully separated from the propulsion module on Thursday.

The Chandrayaan 3 mission’s lander is named after Vikram Sarabhai (1919–1971), who is widely regarded as the father of the Indian space programme. Then the deboosting of the Lander module was undertaken in two phases. Deboosting is the process of slowing down to position itself in an orbit where the orbit’s closest point to the Moon is.

The stated objectives of Chandrayaan 3, India’s third lunar mission, were safe and soft landing on the lunar surface, the rover moving on the moon’s surface, and in-situ scientific experiments.

Upon landing, the lander and the rover were to operate for one lunar day. One day on the Moon is equal to 14 days on Earth. Chandrayaan-3’s development phase commenced in January 2020, with the launch planned sometime in 2021.
