A Dalit Hindu woman who accepted Islam almost four years ago, leaving her family and country behind has become a victim of polygamy. Her husband Mohammad Talif, left her alone for another woman. Police filed a case under sections of the SC-ST Act and IPC 498A.

The victim is identified as 25-year-old Preeti Kumari, a native of Bulandshahr district of Uttar Pradesh. Whereas the accused has been identified as 30-year-old Mohammad Talif, a resident of Semra village of Motihari in East Champaran, Bihar.

Police arrested four accused

A First Information Report has been registered at the Turkauliya police station in this case. Organiser has accessed the FIR and has also spoken with the Station House Officer. So, far out of the five named accused, the police have arrested four of them.

The arrested accused include Parvez Raza (Talif’s father), Israt Raza (Talif’s mother), Akib and Adil Raza (Brothers of Talif). Talif is absconding.

The Station House Officer, Anil Kumar told Organiser that Talif moved to India almost a year ago and had Nikah with another woman. The victim lives in Delhi.

He added, based on her complaint the accused have been booked under IPC sections 341 (wrongful restraint), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 379 (theft), 494 (marrying again after having a husband or wife), 498a (harassment of women), 420 (cheating), 504 (intentionally insult), 506 (criminal intimidation), 34 (act done by many people with common intention) with sections 3(1)(r) (s) (ii)(iii) and (v) of the Prevention of Atrocities Act.

After registering the complaint the victim returned to Delhi, she has not recorded her statement under section 164 of the CrPC.

Talif Converted Preeti to Islam

As per the FIR (number–546/2023), the victim Preeti told the police that, she currently lives in sector 73 in Noida, Uttar Pradesh in a rented apartment. Back in 2009, she used to teach at a coaching centre in Noida sector-73 only.

There lived a man next door, Mohammad Talif Raza, they became friends and soon lovers, Talif also worked at the same coaching as a teacher, like Preeti. After they became serious about each other, they moved in together, it was in 2009 itself.

After some days, they started working at a private firm together. Then came 2018 and Talif left Delhi to move to Dubai for work. Within a year he asked Preeti to move to Dubai as well. In 2019, Preeti left Delhi and found a job at a parlour in Dubai.

In Dubai, Preeti and Talif got married to each other, before the ‘nikah’ she converted to Islam. The marriage followed Islamic rituals. They lived as husband and wife for a while until September 2022 when Preeti came back to India for treatments.

After the treatment when she returned to Dubai, she found her room locked, Talif was missing. She inquired the neighbours and they tell her, Talif left the place soon after her. She broke into the room and found all her belongings were missing. As mentioned in the FIR Talif took away her gold jewellery, 5 lakh cash and other precious stuff with him.

She tried calling his number but it went unreachable. Preeti then tried his Whatsapp but to no avail, as her messages and calls went unanswered. After days, when Talif finally responded he was behaving strangely.

To begin with, he turned abusive, he passed casteist slurs as quoted in the FIR Talif had said, “You belong to a low caste and I will not keep you as a wife, If you kept irritating me I will get you killed,” he added.

Talif wants 10 Lakh rupees

Preeti returned back to India, in February 2023, Talif came to Delhi at Preeti’s house, and he said if she will bring Rs 10 Lakh and stuff as dowry he will accept her. She fell to his feet crying for mercy but he was stiff with his demands.

On May 9, Preeti reached Talif’s house in Champaran with her brother, his family members did not allow Preeti to enter the house saying, “Bring ten Lakh rupees first only then you are welcomed here”.

Preeti protested outside his house

She spent the whole night standing outside Talif’s house, in the morning she reached the village heads and Panchayat for justice. They said they will help her. On May 10, the villagers called for a panchayat where Talif and his family said, this woman comes from a lower caste and if she wishes to live with them she will have to bring ten lakh as dowry.

Refusing which led to a scuffle between Preeti and Talif’s family, the villagers somehow rescued her and then she filed this complaint against them.

Talif had another wife

Preeti told Organiser that, she did everything Talif asked her to in her life since they met. She accepted Islam, started wearing Hijab and Burqa, and followed all Islamic rituals leaving Hindusim behind.

‘Now after four years he did this to me’, she added.

After making her leave her family, her friends, and her country Talif left her alone. After reaching his village she found, Talif has another wife, when she tried getting inside his house to tell her about him, Talif and his family thrashed her.

‘They want money from me to keep me as the second wife’, she added.

“He will not leave the other woman, I will have to share my husband, for this he made me leave my identity, my family and my everything”,

Preeti’s video from May 11, outside Talif’s house is going viral on Twitter, watch:
