Pitbull dogs are notoriously aggressive, and their assaults can result in serious harm or even death. Children or elderly people who are unable to defend themselves from the dog’s hostility are frequently the victims.
A 30-year-old man named Karan was attacked and hurt by a pit bulldog on the morning of April 13 in his field in Bijna village, Karnal, Haryana. Even though Karan tried to get rid of the dog after it bit him in the privates, it wouldn’t go until he put a handkerchief in its mouth.
The victim was severely hurt, and those nearby helped him to get admitted to the Gharaunda civil hospital. He was later sent to the Karnal Government Hospital because of his critical condition.
The victim’s family reported that the Pitbull had been running loose in the village since last week and had attacked someone two days prior. Due to the dog’s presence, the people were afraid to leave their homes.
To stop more attacks, the villagers decided to take action and beat the dog to death with sticks. The incident has been reported to the police, who have taken the injured youth’s and his family members’ testimony.
Several incidences have been reported around India where certain dog breeds, like Pitbull, Dogo Argentino, and Rottweilers, have attacked and even caused death to the common public and their owners. The attacks have compelled the authorities to enact stringent regulations to prevent further incidences. The civic bodies of Kanpur, Ghaziabad, Noida, Gurugram & Panchkula have taken strict action and banned certain dog breeds from reducing attacks.
The dog’s behaviour is primarily influenced by its upbringing, training, and environment rather than just its breed. However, some dog breeds are often associated with specific characteristics that may pose a higher risk in certain circumstances. It’s important to note that breed-specific legislation (BSL) and dangerous dog laws vary by country, state, and municipality and can change over time. Researching and understanding the specific rules and regulations in your area is crucial.
The Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation (GMC) banned three pet dog breeds: Rottweilers, Pitbulls, and Dogo Argentinos, in October 202. Those with it already need to get it serialized and registered on their portal, or a fine of Rs 5000 will be slapped on the owners. The Noida authorities have threatened punishment against dog pets, including a Rs 10,000 fine for any untoward incident. Following a directive from the District Consumer Dispute Redressal Forum (DCDRF), Gurugram announced a ban on 11 foreign dog breeds: American Pitbull terriers, Dogo Argentino, Rottweiler, Neapolitan mastiffs, Boerboel, Presa Canario, Wolf dog, Bandog, American Bulldog, Fila Brasileiro and Cane Corso. The Kanpur & Panchkula Municipal authorities have also banned Pitbull & Rottweiler dog breeds.
It’s important to note that BSL and dangerous dog laws are controversial and have been widely debated. Many animal welfare organizations and experts oppose BSL, as it is often seen as discriminatory and ineffective in preventing dog bites or attacks. Even dog owners have protested against the unjust laws and are told that it is the owner’s responsibility to train their dogs and not blame the breed of the dog as it’s very discriminatory, and to ban a particular breed is not the solution. One needs to punish the deed and not the breed.
It’s essential to focus on responsible dog ownership, proper training, socialization, and adequate supervision of dogs, regardless of breed, to prevent incidents and promote safe interactions between dogs and humans.
