After the Calcutta High Court ordered a CBI probe into the post-poll violence in West Bengal, BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari said that the state government wanted to hide the matter to achieve political goals. Slamming Mamata Banerjee for failing to stop the violence, Adhikari said that political violence should be stopped in Bengal permanently.

Welcoming the Calcutta High Court’s decision, NHRC fact-finding team member Atif Rasheed said, “It’s the first step in getting justice for those who suffered punishment for choosing a political party and endured crimes like violence, murder, rape etc.”

He further said that he expects the police to work honestly and help in establishing justice in Bengal.

“But justice is not established yet. This is the first step towards justice, but it has definitely given hope to the poor labourers of Bengal who were punished for choosing BJP as an alternative,” he added.

Rasheed was a member of the team constituted by the National Human Rights Commission probing the alleged post-poll violence in West Bengal.
