Over one thousand militants join the mainstream in Assam

Guwahati: In a major boost to realize Assam an insurgency-free State,over one thousand armed militants join the peace process responding to the clarion call of BJP led State government in Dispur. Ushering in lasting peace for the region, 1040 militants including g dreaded insurgent leader Ingti Kathar Songbijit laid down their arms on 23 February. The rebels deposited 338 arms of different kinds along with 11203 bullets.

Militants belong to five Karbi Anglong based armed outfits namely Karbi People’s Liberation Tiger (KPLT), People’s Democratic Council of Karbi Longri (PDCK), Karbi Longri NC Hills Liberation Front (KLNLF), Kuki Liberation Front (KLF) and United People’s Liberation Army (UPLA) surrendered in presence of State chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal, also in charge of home portfolio, at a function held in Shrimanta Shankardev Kalakshetra.

Welcoming the militants to mainstream society, Sonowal also congratulated them for deciding to give up arms with an aim to repose faith in the Indian constitution. He commented that Karbi Anglong is one of the most beautiful districts in the region and urged the surrendered rebels to contribute in making Aatmanirbhar Assam through an self-dependent Karbi hills region.

Mentioning about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s endeavour of equal development in every corner of the country, Assam is making rapid strides towards prosperity, stated Sonowal adding that Dispur’s role is not limited to only bring back the militants but also to ensure a dignified livelihood for them.

He appreciated Karbi Anglong autonomous council’s chief executive member Tuliram Ronghang for his initiative to bring peace and prosperity to the hills district with supports from the unified command structure comprising State police, army personnel, paramilitary forces and intelligence agencies. Sonowal also appreciated Asom Sahitya Sabha’s former president Rong Bong Terang and representatives of Karbi Sahitya Sabha & Karbi cultural society for their presence in the function.

State chief secretary Jishnu Baruah, police chief Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta, CM’s media adviser Hrishikesh Goswami, Parliamentarian Haren Singh Bey, additional police chief (special branch) Hiren Nath, additional police chief (law & order) GP Singh, senior Indian Army officer SP Singh, with a number of Karbi village heads, local leading citizens etc were also present on the occasion.
