Cultural Tourism : Kumbakonam
About the Temple
Not too far from Thanjavur, and intricately connected to the Marathas, is the “Temple Town Kumbakonam”. Indeed, it is said the town has been built to redeem visitors of all astrological ill-afflictions.
What to See
A dip in the Adi Kumbheswara Temple pond is what many pilgrims come here for round the year. Historically, the town gained prominence in the times of the Cholas, but came to be known all over our country possibly owing to the Thanjavur Marathas. Its temples are legendary and the town is thronged by both Shiva and Vishnu Bhakthas, for the latter this town is one of the 108 Divya Kshetras in India. Kumbakonam is well-connected by road and rail. There is a lot of wisdom to be gained by going around the countryside, where even today several Hindu customs and
traditions are scrupulously practiced by the temple priests temples sprawling all over.
One should also interact with the local school kids who have a highly nationalistic & progressive vision, intertwined with modern scientific knowledge. It is a treat in itself. Do come!
