Thrissur Pooram is the most talked about cultural tourist attraction in Kerala. Thrissur city, the centre of Thrissur district in the central Kerala, is considered to be the cultural capital of the state.
What to See
‘The mother of all Poorams’ in Kerala was launched in 1798 by Raja Rama Varma, popularly known as Sakthan Thampuran, the king of Kochi from 1790 to 1805. Until then the largest festival in Kerala was the Pooram in Arattupuzha, again in Thrissur district.
Pooram begins with flag hoisting followed by the exhibition of display of golden elephant caparisons,
ornamental fans made of peacock feathers, royal fans, sacred bells and decorative umbrellas, etc. which are part and parcel of the Pooram.
During the actual festival in April-May, special trains and state owned transport corporation’s special travel services facilitate the progress in the number of tourists year after years.
Pooram Exhibition, is another feature of the mega festival. It is not only a venue for shopping but also a pack of wisdom and knowledge. Organisations from all over the
country participate in it.
How to Reach
Thrissur is 52 kms away from Kochi International Airport. Railway station and bus stations are very much
