RSS Sarsanghachalak Shri K.S. Sudarshan was on a three-day tour of Uttaranchal recently. He reached Keshavpuram Sevashram at Maneri in Uttarkashi on October 23, where he was accorded a warm traditional welcome by the locals. Dr Nityanand, patron of the Uttaranchal Daivi Apada Peerit Sahayata Samiti and a veteran Sangh Pracharak, welcomed him at the main gate of the Ashram. On October 25, Shri Sudarshan visited Gangotri where Pandit Ramesh Semwal, president of Shri Mandir Samiti and secretary Shri Harish Semwal, welcomed him.

Addressing a gathering of workers engaged in rural development at Keshavpuram on October 23, Shri K.S. Sudarshan said the concept of rural development should be seen in the context of Hindutva and only then is the all-round development of villages possible. He emphasised on the development of a swabhimani samaj with the help of the society. ?Founding of an ideal village through better utilisation of available resources, new experiments in agriculture, cooperation, sense of duty to the work, cleanliness and value-based education are the greatest need,? he said.

Apprising the workers of the good and inspiring works being done by the workers of Sangh-associated organisations he mentioned the work of one Shri Deepak Sachdeva of Harda, about 150 km from Itarasi in Madhya Pradesh, who has studied the naturally grown trees and plants in the forest and has proved that grain production can be enhanced many times even after following the traditional system of agriculture and without using the chemical fertilizers. He said our Vedic scriptures through mantras and sutras have provided information about technology but today'sscientists could not make use of it due to lack of Sanskrit knowledge. He said today'sSanskrit scholars are as far from the science as the scientists are from Sanskrit. This is the reason India has failed to understand its legacy and the day we realise that glory we will become vishwaguru. Shri Sudarshan also stressed the need to develop alternate resources of energy.

Shri Surendra Chauhan, member of RSS national executive, who has done very remarkable work in rural development in Madhya Pradesh, explained various concepts of rural development. He said the policies of development should be prepared on the basis of regions and not at the national level as the problems differ from regions to regions. He said if the schemes are made from lower level the development would be better. Elaborating on the rural development works being done by swayamsevaks across the country he said there are 661 Uday Grams in the country, which have been developed completely and there are 136 Prabhat Grams where the development work is going on. The workers from Janjatiya Gramotthan Prakalp Makhti Pokhri (Dehradun), Bhrigu Gramotthan Prakalp, Bhigun (Uttarkashi), Gram Vikas Prakalp Bagauri (Udham Singh Nagar), Uttaranchal Daivi Apada Peerit Sahayata Samiti, Maneri, Shri Karnsevashram Uttarkashi, Uttaranchal Utthan Parishad, Boongidhar Prakalp, Pauri Garhwal, Pan Bijali and Goshal Prakalp (Bageshar), Gram Vikas Prakalp, Muvani (Pithoragarh), Sewa Prakalp, Narayankoti (Rudraprayag), Divya Prem Sewa Mission (Haridwar), Dudhatoli Vikas Sansthan Pauri and Matri Andolan, also attended the meeting.

Presiding over the function, Shri Kalyan Singh Rawat, founder of Matri Andolan, stressed on the constructive work. Kshetra Pracharak Shri Dineshji emphasised the need to accelerate the work. Shri Trivendra Singh Rawat, Agriculture Minister of Uttaranchal, was also present on the occasion.

Later, Shri Sudarshan addressed a meeting of uniformed swayamsevaks at government school, Maneri. He said the dilly-dallying approach of the communists on Ram Sethu is benefiting the US. ?They are opposing the US on nuclear deal but are silent on Ram Sethu,? he added. Swami Kamleshanand Maharaj presided over the function.

Elaborating on the rehabilitation work done by Uttaranchal Daivi Apada Peerit Sahayata Samiti after the severe earthquake that hit Uttaranchal on October 20, 1991, Shri Prem Barakoti, vice president, said the Samiti has constructed 427 earthquake-resistant houses in 10 villages and renovated 14 temples. A total of Rs three crore have been spent on the rehabilitation work. The Samiti also helped the victims after natural disasters of Kedarghati in 1998, landslide of Malpa and earthquake of Chamoli in 1991. He said the Samiti is also undertaking constructive works in 60 border villages of the state. At present the Samiti runs 49 Ekal Vidyalayas, 27 Saraswati Shishu Mandirs, five Saraswati Vidya Mandirs and three hostels. Besides this, the training for cow protection, cottage industries and organic farming is also being imparted to the villagers. Kshetra Karyavah Dr Darshanlal Arora, Kshetra Sewa Pramukh Shri Gangaram, Prant Sanghachalak Shri Chandrapal Singh Negi, organising secretary of Vidya Bharati Shri Brahmdev Sharma ?Bhaiji?, Dr Nityananda, Prant Pracharak Shri Shivprakash, MLA from Gangotri Shri Gopal Singh Rawat were also present on the occasion.

Shri Sudarshan also addressed a Matri Sammelan at Maneri and called upon the women to play an active role in giving a new direction to the society. Presiding over the function, Dr Harshvanti Bisht, noted mountaineer and Arjun Award winner, expressed concern over the growing tampering with the nature. Smt. Sudhua Gupta, chairman, Uttarkashi Municipal Council, conducted the proceedings. Smt Pushpa Chauhan and Smt. Renu Joshi also spoke on the occasion. Shri Sudarshan also addressed a meeting of prominent people in Tehri.

Shri Sudarshan said the concept of rural development should be seen in the context of Hindutva and only then is the all-round development of villages possible. He emphasised on the development of a swabhimani samaj with the help of the society. ?Founding of an ideal village through better utilisation of available resources, new experiments in agriculture, cooperation, sense of duty to the work, cleanliness and value-based education are the greatest need,? he said.
