India’s development trajectory between 2014 and 2026 reflects a broad expansion of infrastructure, connectivity, energy capacity, digital public infrastructure and essential public services. Across roads, railways, metros, aviation, ports, electricity, telecommunications, healthcare, education, water access and space technology, the period witnessed measurable growth supported by large-scale public investment, technology adoption, domestic manufacturing and institutional initiatives.
The transformation is visible in the scale of physical infrastructure created during these 12 years. The National Highway network expanded by 61 per cent, while India’s metro network increased from 248 km to more than 1,155 km. Operational airports rose from 74 to 165, railway electrification reached 99.6 per cent of the broad-gauge network, and the country’s total road network expanded to 63.73 lakh km. These developments significantly increased the scale of transport and connectivity infrastructure across the country.
The energy sector also recorded a major expansion. Installed power capacity increased from 248 GW in 2014 to 532.74 GW by March 2026, while the power shortage declined from 4.2 per cent to 0.03 per cent. Rural electricity availability increased from 12.5 hours to 22.6 hours a day, while the Saubhagya Scheme electrified 2.86 crore households.
India’s digital infrastructure expanded at an equally significant pace. Internet connections increased from 25.15 crore to 100.29 crore, broadband connections rose to 99.56 crore, and 5G connectivity reached 99.9 per cent of districts. The Aadhaar ecosystem expanded to more than 144 crore enrolments, Jan Dhan accounts increased to 57.71 crore, and UPI processed 2,264 crore transactions worth ₹29.53 lakh crore in March 2026 alone.
Public service infrastructure also expanded across healthcare, higher education, skill development and household welfare. The number of AIIMS increased from seven to 22, medical colleges expanded substantially, Ayushman Bharat covered more than 50 crore people, and more than 10,000 Jan Aushadhi Kendras were established. Higher education institutions also increased, while more than 1.64 crore youth were trained or oriented under the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana up to December 2025.
Water and household infrastructure recorded substantial expansion as well. Under the Jal Jeevan Mission, rural tap water coverage increased from 3.23 crore households, or 17 per cent, in 2019 to 15.86 crore households, or 81.94 per cent, by June 2026. LPG coverage rose from 55.9 per cent to 107.2 per cent, while the number of LPG consumers increased from 14.51 crore to 33.39 crore.
The period also saw India expand its capabilities in space technology. Landmark missions included the Mars Orbiter Mission, Chandrayaan-3, Aditya-L1, XPoSat and SpaDeX. The number of space startups increased from one in 2014 to more than 400 by February 2026, while the number of foreign satellites launched by India rose to 399 by March 2026.
The detailed incidents of 12 Years of Transformation:
Railway Transformation
Between 2014 and 2026, Indian Railways underwent a major modernisation drive, supported by a nine-fold increase in budgetary allocation from Rs 32,000 crore in 2014-15 to Rs 2.78 lakh crore in 2026-27.
During this period, 69,873 route km of railway lines were electrified, taking broad-gauge network electrification to 99.6 percent. More than 78 percent of tracks were also upgraded for speeds of 110 km/h and above.
Passenger services expanded with the introduction of 162 Vande Bharat trains and 60 Amrit Bharat Express services. The Vande Bharat Sleeper was also launched during this period, alongside an increase in exports of Indian railway products.
Railway safety also improved with the deployment of the indigenous Kavach system. The system has been deployed across 3,103 route km. Train accidents declined from 135 in 2014-15 to 16 in 2025-26.
Under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, 208 railway stations were modernised. Landmark infrastructure projects, including the Chenab Bridge, Anji Khad Bridge, Pamban Bridge and the Bairabi-Sairang railway line, further strengthened freight movement, regional connectivity and strategic infrastructure.
The modernisation drive marked a major expansion in railway electrification, passenger services, safety systems and infrastructure during the period.
Roads and Highways
India’s road network expanded to 63.73 lakh km, making it the world’s second-largest road network. The National Highway network grew by 61 percent, increasing from 91,287 km in FY14 to 1,46,572 km by March 2026.
The network of four-lane and wider highways also expanded significantly, rising from 18,371 km to 45,516 km. During the period, 3,644 km of access-controlled expressways became operational.
Under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), budget allocation increased from Rs 386 crore in 2014-15 to Rs 19,000 crore in 2026-27. As of the reported period, 99.6 percent of eligible habitations had been connected. Completed rural roads increased from 3.86 lakh km during 2000-14 to 4.11 lakh km during 2014-26, while the number of completed bridges increased from 484 to 10,293.
Bharatmala Pariyojana, launched in 2017, accelerated freight and regional connectivity. By 31 March 2026, 22,590 km of roads had been completed under the programme, including economic corridors, border roads, coastal roads and expressways.
Several landmark projects were also completed during the period, including the Atal Tunnel, Dr. Syama Prasad Mukherjee Tunnel, Dhola-Sadiya Bridge, Maitri Setu, Sudarshan Setu and the Z-Morh (Sonamarg) Tunnel. These projects improved all-weather connectivity, tourism, trade and strategic mobility.
Major recent projects include the 109 km Ahmedabad-Dholera Expressway, completed in 2026; the 213 km Delhi-Dehradun Economic Corridor, which reduced travel time from more than six hours to approximately 2.5 hours; the Delhi section of the Dwarka Expressway, completed in 2025; the 76 km Urban Extension Road-II; and the NH-31 Ganga Bridge between Mokama and Begusarai, which reduced the travel distance for heavy vehicles by more than 100 km.
Metro and Regional Rapid Transit Systems
India’s metro network expanded from 248 km in 2014 to more than 1,155 km in 2026, making it the world’s third-largest metro network. Metro connectivity also increased from five cities to 26 cities by 2025, while daily ridership grew from 28 lakh to more than 1.15 crore passengers.
The pace of metro commissioning accelerated significantly during the period, rising from 0.68 km per month before 2014 to nearly 6 km per month. Annual budgetary support increased from Rs 5,798 crore in 2013-14 to Rs 29,550 crore in 2025-26, while Rs 3.7 lakh crore was invested in metro expansion over 12 years.
The Metro Rail Policy, 2017 strengthened integrated urban mobility planning through Comprehensive Mobility Plans and Urban Metropolitan Transport Authorities.
Under the Make in India initiative, BEML manufactured more than 2,100 metro coaches by March 2026, supported by indigenous procurement norms.
The period also saw several major innovations in urban transport. India’s first underwater metro was commissioned beneath the Hooghly River in Kolkata in 2024. The Kochi Water Metro connected 10 islands using electric hybrid boats, with its first boat launched in December 2021.
The Namo Bharat Rapid Rail on the Delhi-Meerut route, introduced in 2025, featured ETCS Hybrid Level-III signalling designed to enable faster, safer and more efficient operations.
Civil Aviation and Regional Air Connectivity Revolution
India’s civil aviation sector expanded rapidly between 2014 and 2026, with the number of operational airports increasing from 74 to 165. The expansion was supported by more than Rs 1.4 lakh crore in investments and contributed to wider regional connectivity.
The UDAN Scheme, launched in 2016, aimed to make air travel more affordable and accessible. By 2026, 665 routes connected 95 airports, heliports and water aerodromes, benefiting more than 1.64 crore passengers.
The Modified UDAN Scheme, introduced in 2026 with an outlay of Rs 28,840 crore, aims to connect 120 new destinations.
Airport infrastructure also expanded through 25 approved greenfield airports after 2014. These included Mopa, Kannur, Hollongi, Navi Mumbai and Noida (Jewar), alongside the modernisation of terminal facilities.
Digital initiatives also changed the passenger experience. Digi Yatra enabled facial recognition-based contactless travel at 38 airports by May 2026 and had served more than 9.3 crore passengers.
Ports, Shipping and Inland Waterways Transformation
India’s maritime sector handles 95 percent of the country’s trade by volume and 70 percent by value. During the period from 2014 to 2026, major port capacity increased from 873 MMTPA to 1,726 MMTPA, while cargo handled increased from 581 MMT to 915 MMT. Vessel turnaround time also improved from 94 hours to 48.8 hours.
The Sagarmala Programme, launched in 2015, completed 78 projects worth Rs 5,356.75 crore by March 2026. The number of Indian-flagged ships increased from 1,250 to 1,593, while coastal cargo movement rose from 74 MMT to 215.29 MMT. The number of seafarers also increased from 1.27 lakh to 3.20 lakh.
National Waterways expanded from five to 111, with 32 waterways becoming operational. Cargo movement through the waterways increased from 29 MMT to 218 MMT, while Ferry and Ro-Pax passenger numbers reached 10.55 crore.
Under the Jal Marg Vikas Project, cargo movement on National Waterway-1 increased from 5.05 MMT to 16.38 MMT.
Major maritime projects, including Vadhvan Port, Tuna Tekra Terminal and ISRF Cochin, further strengthened maritime infrastructure. India’s first hydrogen fuel-cell vessel was also launched in 2025.
Sea cruise passenger numbers increased from 1.10 lakh to 4.62 lakh, while river cruise routes expanded from three to 17 during the period.
Energy Security and Universal Electrification
India’s power sector recorded significant expansion between 2014 and 2026, with the power shortage declining from 4.2 percent in 2014 to 0.03 percent in 2025-26. Average rural electricity availability also increased from 12.5 hours to 22.6 hours per day.
The financial position of distribution companies (DISCOMs) improved during the period. Their combined losses declined from Rs 67,962 crore in FY2013-14 to a profit of Rs 2,701 crore in FY2024-25.
Installed power capacity more than doubled from 248 GW in 2014 to 532.74 GW by March 2026. India also achieved its COP21 target of 40 percent non-fossil fuel electricity capacity nearly a decade ahead of schedule and became the world’s third-largest clean energy producer and fourth-largest country in installed wind capacity.
The Saubhagya Scheme, launched in 2017, electrified 2.86 crore households, enabling near-universal household electricity access.
The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, launched in 2024, further accelerated rooftop solar adoption, with a target of providing rooftop solar installations to 1 crore households.
Digital Connectivity and Public Digital Infrastructure
Between 2014 and 2026, India’s digital connectivity expanded significantly, with tele-density increasing from 75.23 percent to 86.23 percent. The number of internet connections rose from 25.15 crore to 100.29 crore, while broadband connections increased from 6.1 crore to 99.56 crore.
Monthly data usage also increased substantially, rising from 61.66 MB to 24.01 GB per user. By 2026, 85.5 percent of households owned a smartphone.
5G connectivity expanded to 99.9 percent of districts, with 85 percent population coverage supported by more than 5.08 lakh base transceiver stations (BTSs). The PM-WANI programme deployed more than 4.10 lakh Wi-Fi hotspots, while BharatNet expanded broadband connectivity in rural areas.
The Aadhaar ecosystem expanded from 63.22 crore enrolments to more than 144 crore, while the number of Jan Dhan accounts increased from 14.72 crore to 57.71 crore, strengthening the JAM Trinity.
Digital payments also recorded major growth. The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) processed 2,264 crore transactions worth Rs 29.53 lakh crore in March 2026 alone and expanded its reach to eight countries.
Empowering Homes Through Clean Cooking
India significantly expanded access to clean cooking fuel through the growth of LPG infrastructure, the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) and targeted welfare measures. LPG coverage increased from 55.9 percent to 107.2 percent, while the number of LPG consumers rose from 14.51 crore to 33.39 crore.
LPG consumption also nearly doubled during the period, increasing from 17.6 MMT to 34 MMT.
Under PMUY, 49.21 crore refill cylinders were delivered during FY2025-26, equivalent to about 15.9 lakh refills per day. A further 25 lakh LPG connections were approved.
Average annual refills among PMUY beneficiaries increased from 3.68 to 4.71. The expansion was supported by Aadhaar-based subsidy targeting and wider LPG distribution across the country.
Healthcare Sector
India significantly expanded healthcare infrastructure, medical education, access to affordable medicines and digital health services between 2014 and 2026. The number of All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) increased from seven to 22, including institutions that are operational or under implementation, while the number of medical colleges grew from around 387 to 649.
The number of MBBS seats increased from about 50,000 to more than 95,000, while postgraduate medical seats rose from about 30,000 to nearly 70,000.
Under Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY), 13.7 crore families, covering more than 50 crore people, are covered by health insurance of Rs 5 lakh annually per family.
The number of Jan Aushadhi Kendras also expanded from around 80 to more than 10,000, increasing access to affordable medicines.
Under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM), more than 550 million citizens received digital health IDs. India also emerged as a global vaccine hub by supplying more than 2.5 billion COVID-19 vaccine doses worldwide.
12 Years of Building India’s Space Power
India emerged as a leading global space power with a series of landmark achievements between 2014 and 2026, including the Mars Orbiter Mission in 2014, Chandrayaan-3 and Aditya-L1 in 2023, XPoSat in 2024 and the SpaDeX docking mission in 2025. The Gaganyaan human spaceflight programme and the Bharatiya Antariksh Station also progressed towards realisation during the period.
India’s commercial space ecosystem expanded rapidly during the period. The number of space startups increased from one in 2014 to more than 400 by February 2026. The sector was supported by a Rs 1,000 crore Venture Capital Fund, a Rs 500 crore Technology Adoption Fund and liberalised 100 percent foreign direct investment in selected space activities.
India also expanded its role as a global launch partner. The number of foreign satellites launched by India increased from 35 before 2014 to 399 by March 2026. The country signed more than 300 space cooperation agreements with 61 countries and five multilateral organisations, expanding its international space engagement.
Major investments were also made in space infrastructure. These included approval of a Rs 3,984.86 crore Third Launch Pad at Sriharikota, development of a second spaceport in Tamil Nadu, next-generation launch vehicles, reusable rocket technologies and launch systems capable of placing 10-tonne payloads into Low Earth Orbit.
Higher Education Infrastructure and Skill Development
India’s higher education infrastructure expanded significantly between 2014 and 2025. The number of universities increased from 760 to 1,338, while colleges grew from 38,498 to 52,081. The total number of higher education institutions increased from 51,534 to 70,018.
Premier institutions also expanded during the period. The number of Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) increased from 16 to 23, while Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) increased from 13 to 21. The number of All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) increased from seven to 20, while medical colleges nearly doubled from 431 to 818, substantially increasing the availability of MBBS and postgraduate medical seats.
Since the launch of the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) in 2015, more than 1.64 crore youth had been trained or oriented and 1.29 crore had been certified up to December 2025.
During the first three phases of PMKVY, 24.3 lakh candidates secured placements, with an overall placement rate of 42.8 percent among graduates of short-term training programmes.
Independent evaluations also reported industry acceptance of PMKVY-trained candidates. A NITI Aayog study found that 94 percent of employers surveyed were willing to hire candidates trained under PMKVY. Among beneficiaries of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), 52 percent reported higher or expected higher earnings.
An evaluation by the Indian Institute of Public Administration (IIPA) found that 70.5 percent of surveyed trainees were employed in their preferred skill sector.
Tap Water Across India
India significantly strengthened its water infrastructure between 2014 and 2026 by integrating water governance under the Ministry of Jal Shakti in 2019 and expanding investments in drinking water, irrigation, river rejuvenation and water conservation.
Under the Jal Jeevan Mission, rural tap water coverage increased from 3.23 crore households, representing 17 percent coverage, in 2019 to 15.86 crore households, or 81.94 percent, by June 2026. The mission has been extended until 2028 with the objective of achieving universal rural tap water coverage.
Water security was further strengthened through the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana, launched in 2015 for irrigation, and the Namami Gange Programme, launched in 2014 for river rejuvenation.
The Ken-Betwa Link Project, launched in 2021, also marked a major development in water infrastructure as India’s first river interlinking project. The project is aimed at benefiting the drought-prone Bundelkhand region.
The documented developments from 2014 to 2026 show a broad expansion of India’s physical and public infrastructure. Roads, railways, metros, airports, ports and waterways expanded alongside major investments in electricity, telecommunications and digital connectivity. The figures presented across these sectors indicate a substantial increase in infrastructure capacity and reach during the period.
The transformation extended beyond physical infrastructure. Digital platforms such as Aadhaar, Jan Dhan and UPI expanded the country’s public digital infrastructure, while 5G, BharatNet and PM-WANI widened digital connectivity. Healthcare, higher education, skill development, clean cooking fuel and rural tap water also recorded measurable increases in coverage and institutional capacity.
Strategic and technological capabilities expanded alongside these developments. India strengthened railway safety through Kavach, expanded indigenous metro manufacturing, developed new maritime and aviation infrastructure, increased non-fossil electricity capacity and recorded major achievements in space missions and commercial space activity.
