Muzaffarnagar: In a significant crackdown on identity fraud and related criminal activity, the Muzaffarnagar City Kotwali police arrested three men and recovered multiple fake Aadhaar cards bearing Hindu and Muslim names. The arrests were made in the Nyazipura area of Muzaffarnagar, following intelligence inputs and focused surveillance by local law enforcement.

The three accused have been identified as Khalid, Saddam, and Talib. According to the police, Khalid and Saddam are uncle and nephew, while Talib is an associate of the pair. All three are residents of neighbouring districts, one from Kairana and two from Bagpat, and were residing together in a rented room in Muzaffarnagar, paying a nominal monthly rent of Rs 1,500.

During the operation, the police seized multiple Aadhaar cards from the suspects. What raised suspicions was that each man was found to possess at least two fake Aadhaar cards, one with a traditionally Hindu name and another with a Muslim name, suggesting an elaborate attempt to conceal their true identities while operating in diverse localities.

Initial interrogation revealed that the accused used these forged identity documents to move between areas and beg without arousing suspicion. The suspects reportedly changed their identities to match the neighbourhood’s demographics, adopting appropriate names to blend in and avoid attracting attention.

Police officials stated that the fake Aadhaar cards were reportedly obtained through fraudulent means at a “water facility centre,” where the documents were illegally created with different names and identities. The modus operandi suggested a well‑orchestrated scheme rather than isolated forgery.

Senior Superintendent of Police Sanjay Kumar Verma said the arrests were made possible due to precise intelligence and swift action by the local police. The case has been registered under relevant sections of the law pertaining to forgery and fraud, and the trio has been remanded to judicial custody following police questioning.

Given the potential wider implications of the case, the investigation has been handed over to state and central intelligence units, including the Intelligence Bureau (IB), State Intelligence Unit (SIU), and Local Intelligence Unit (LIU). Authorities are now probing whether the suspects are linked to a broader network involved in identity fraud or other criminal enterprises.

The arrest highlights ongoing concerns about the misuse of identity documents in India, especially the circulation of fake Aadhaar cards used to evade law enforcement and exploit societal vulnerabilities.
