POKHRAN: A wave of protests swept through Pokhran town in Jaisalmer district on January 11, as Hindu organisations staged a massive demonstration over the recent slaughter of cattle in Kelawa village. The protest escalated into a bandh (shutdown) that saw markets and businesses close in solidarity with the cause, reflecting strong local sentiments against animal slaughter.

The demonstrations were triggered by an incident on January 7, when a cattle was slaughtered in Kelawa village. This sparked outrage among local communities, especially in a region where religious and cultural sentiments regarding animal protection run deep. The anger intensified when authorities discovered an illegal slaughterhouse operating in the area, leading to a crackdown by local officials.

This was not the first incident to heighten tensions in Jaisalmer. Just days earlier, authorities had busted another illegal slaughterhouse, detaining five people in connection with unlawful meat operations. The main accused, however, was still absconding. These successive discoveries of illegal slaughterhouses fueled public frustration and set the stage for the mass protest.

In the latest case, police arrested three individuals, Gafar Khan, Murad Ali, and Mohammad Sharif (alias Kalu), while the main suspect, Aala alias Yakub, remains at large. Authorities also took action against encroachments linked to the case, including demolishing the main suspect’s house, citing illegal construction.

The bandh saw significant community participation, with shops and markets closed throughout the day. Police deployed additional personnel to maintain order, ensuring the protest remained largely peaceful despite disruptions to daily life.

As part of broader enforcement measures, officials sealed 19 meat shops in Pokhran after illegal operations came to light. Authorities emphasised that strict action will continue against any individuals involved in unauthorised slaughter activities.

Local Hindu organisations stated that the protest was not only about justice for the slaughtered cattle but also about raising awareness against illegal meat operations that undermine community values and violate the law. The recurring incidents of unlawful slaughter in the area have heightened sensitivities, reflecting long-standing concerns in Rajasthan over animal protection and religious sentiments.

While the immediate situation in Pokhran is under control, these successive incidents have reignited debates about the effectiveness of animal protection laws and enforcement. Authorities continue to investigate illegal slaughterhouse networks, assuring the public that strict legal action will be taken against all offenders.
