Omar Abdullah bites the dust in Lok Sabha Elections 2024; Sheikh Abdul Rashid emerges victorious 

Omar Abdullah has accepted defeat from the Baramula Lok Sabha Constituency in the recentky concluded 2024 elections. Abdullah conceded defeat to the independent Sheikh Abdul Rashid (aka Engineer Rashid) by a 167731 votes as per ECI report

Omar Abdullah lost to former MLA Sheikh Abdul Rashid after he was challenged in a three-cornered battle as the jailed leader and former MLA, Rashid (aka Engineer Rashid) challenged him along with Sajjad Gani Lone in the battle for The Baramulla Lok Sabha seat from North Kashmir. Abdullah lost by 184520 votes as per the ECI.

The Baramulla Lok Sabha constituency influences the electoral equations for 15 assembly segments, namely, Karnah, Langate, Uri, Baramula, Gulmarg, Kupwara, Lolab, Rafiabad, Sopore, Gurez, Bandipur, Sonawari, Sangrama, Handwara, and Pattan.

The Baramulla Lok Sabha Constituency, went to polls on May 20, 2024 and was won by Mohammad Akbar Lone from JKN in the run-up to Lok Sabha of 2019 with a winning margin of 6.64 per cent .

The Baramulla Lok Sabha constituency houses an electorate of 17.2 lakh. Omar Abdullah has served as the Minister of State for External Affairs in the Vajpayee Government (July 2001-December 2002).

Omar has also served as the Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir from  January 2009 to Jan 2015 after he stitched an alliance with the Indian National Congress.

Omar Abdullah has been vice president of the Jammu Kashmir National Conference since 2009 after he inherited the National Conference from the illustrious Faruq Abdullah Family.
