The Gujarat government has begun construction of a new Yatri Niwas in Ayodhya with an estimated cost of Rs 80.25 crore, aimed at providing accommodation and other facilities to pilgrims and tourists travelling from Gujarat to the city.

The facility is being developed by the Tourism Corporation of Gujarat Ltd (TCGL) and is expected to provide a dedicated accommodation option for visitors travelling to Ayodhya for religious, cultural and tourism-related purposes.

The Yatri Niwas will have the capacity to accommodate 308 people. It will also include a large hall with seating arrangements for 864 visitors, making it suitable not only for individual pilgrims but also for organised groups visiting the city.

Facility to come up on nearly 7,000 square metres

According to the Gujarat government, the project is being constructed on 6,929.28 square metres of land in an upcoming township in Ayodhya.

Construction work is already underway, and the facility is expected to become operational within about a year.

The project has been planned as more than just a place for pilgrims to stay. It will include several facilities intended to make the visit more comfortable for individuals, families and organised groups.

The Yatri Niwas will have different categories of rooms along with a reception centre and visitors’ lounge. The complex will also include a souvenir shop, multipurpose hall, auditorium, meeting rooms and dining facilities.

A terrace garden and landscaped areas are also part of the project. Digital display systems will be installed to provide information to visitors and support the overall functioning of the facility.

Focus on pilgrims from Gujarat

The facility is primarily intended to serve devotees and tourists from Gujarat visiting Ayodhya.

The Gujarat government said the project is aimed at providing comfortable accommodation and essential amenities to people travelling to the city for religious and cultural purposes.

The Yatri Niwas is also expected to cater to groups undertaking organised religious and cultural tours.

For visitors travelling in groups, the availability of dedicated accommodation and common facilities can make arrangements easier, particularly during periods when Ayodhya experiences a high number of visitors.

The project is being developed under the guidance of Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi.

The government has described the initiative as part of its effort to provide a comfortable, home-like stay to pilgrims while strengthening the cultural and spiritual connection between Gujarat and Ayodhya.

Ayodhya sees growth in religious tourism

The project comes at a time when Ayodhya has witnessed a major increase in religious tourism following the Pran Pratishtha of Bhagwan Ram Mandir in January 2024.

The consecration ceremony brought national and international attention to Ayodhya and was followed by a substantial increase in the movement of devotees and tourists to the city.

Pilgrims from different parts of India have been travelling to Ayodhya to visit Bhagwan Ram Mandir and other religious and cultural sites in the city.

The increase in visitors has also created a need for additional accommodation, transport facilities, dining options and other visitor infrastructure.

Several States have been taking steps to facilitate pilgrims from their respective regions. Gujarat’s Yatri Niwas is part of this wider effort to create dedicated facilities for visitors travelling to Ayodhya.

Earlier plan had Rs 50 crore allocation

The Gujarat government had earlier announced plans to establish a Yatri Bhavan in Ayodhya for pilgrims from the State.

In March 2024, the government had earmarked Rs 50 crore for the proposed facility.

The latest project has an estimated cost of Rs 80.25 crore, indicating a larger plan with expanded accommodation capacity and a broader range of facilities.

The new design includes not only rooms but also spaces for meetings, dining, cultural activities and group gatherings.

The large hall, with seating capacity for 864 people, is expected to be particularly useful for organised groups and religious or cultural programmes.

Strengthening Gujarat-Ayodhya cultural links

The project is also being presented as a way to strengthen the cultural and spiritual links between Gujarat and Ayodhya.

Gujarat has a long association with religious tourism, while Ayodhya has emerged as one of the country’s major pilgrimage destinations following the construction and inauguration of the new Bhagwan Ram Mandir.

A dedicated facility for visitors from Gujarat can provide pilgrims with a familiar place to stay while also supporting organised travel between the State and Ayodhya.

The inclusion of dining facilities, reception services, visitor areas and digital information systems is expected to make the facility useful for different categories of travellers.

Part of Ayodhya’s expanding visitor infrastructure

The construction of the Yatri Niwas comes amid the broader expansion of infrastructure in Ayodhya to accommodate the growing number of visitors.

The city has been witnessing development across accommodation, roads, transport, public facilities and tourism infrastructure.

For Gujarat, the new facility is expected to provide a dedicated base for pilgrims and tourists from the State.

Once operational, the Rs 80.25 crore Yatri Niwas will provide accommodation for 308 people and common facilities for larger groups. The project is therefore aimed not only at meeting the immediate accommodation needs of pilgrims but also at supporting the growing religious and cultural tourism ecosystem around Ayodhya.

With construction already underway and completion expected within a year, the facility is set to become another dedicated accommodation option for devotees from Gujarat visiting Ayodhya and Bhagwan Ram Mandir.
