KANPUR: A 30-year-old man was arrested in Kanpur after a 25-year-old woman from Thailand allegedly accused him of concealing his existing marriage, cheating her of around Rs 60 lakh and pressuring her to convert her religion.

According to police, the woman met the accused, identified as Irfan and a resident of Latouche Road, on Instagram around four years ago. She alleged that Irfan travelled to Thailand several times and proposed marriage without revealing that he was already married.

The woman told police that the two subsequently married according to Thai customs around one-and-a-half years ago. She alleged that Irfan later sought money from her on the pretext of business requirements and obtained around 20 lakh baht, equivalent to approximately Rs 60 lakh, over seven to eight months.

The dispute reportedly escalated after the woman learned that Irfan was already married and had children. When she allegedly sought repayment of her money and attempted to end the relationship, she claimed that Irfan pressured her to move permanently to India and convert her religion, saying he would continue their marital relationship only if she did so.

The woman subsequently travelled to Kanpur and went to Irfan’s residence, where she alleged that she was physically assaulted.

DCP Central Atul Kumar Srivastava said the woman approached the authorities after arriving in Kanpur and alleged that she had been deceived about Irfan’s marital status and had been defrauded of approximately Rs 60 lakh.

Following her complaint, a police team was sent to the accused’s residence and Irfan was apprehended. As the incident falls under the jurisdiction of Anwarganj police station, the complaint was transferred there and the investigation was handed over to the ACP Anwarganj.

Police said a case has been registered under relevant sections of law and the accused has been arrested. During questioning, Irfan allegedly failed to provide a satisfactory explanation regarding the allegations.
