Speaking to media, the girl’s mother recalled what happened after her daughter returned home on the evening of September 19.
“She came home at around 9 pm. She was a little later than usual, but when I saw that she was tired and disturbed, I did not question her much,” the mother said.
According to her, the girl went directly to her room, shut the door, changed her clothes and lay down.
The mother later called her for dinner. The girl came out, ate a little and returned to her room.
“I asked her if something was wrong. She simply said everything was fine,” the mother recalled.
The girl then went to sleep.
The following day was Sunday, and the mother said she allowed her daughter to sleep late.
“I woke her around 10 am for breakfast. She ate and went back to her room. She did not speak to anyone,” she said.
The mother said her daughter had sometimes remained quiet in the past, so she did not initially suspect that something serious had happened.
“I did not ask her many questions. I did not want to trouble her,” she said.
Later that afternoon, the mother saw her daughter writing something in a notebook.
“I thought she was studying, so I came back,” she said.
The family only began to understand what had happened later that evening.
The mother said she had heard about a video circulating in Jamui and nearby areas. She decided to tell the girl’s father when he returned home.
“After her father came home, I told him about the viral video. We then called our daughter and asked her to sit with us,” she said.
The girl reportedly began crying as soon as she came to her parents.
“She was frightened. I asked her what had happened and told her not to be afraid because we were with her,” the mother said.
The parents then spoke to their daughter privately, after which she narrated what had happened on September 19.
The mother said she had already heard about the incident from people in the locality by the evening of September 20, but the family did not know the complete details until the girl spoke to them herself.
The victim’s mother also spoke about the boy who was with her daughter during the incident.
She said he did not leave the girl despite being surrounded by several other boys.
“The boy who was with my daughter is very good. He did not abandon her. So many boys had come and stood in front of him, yet he did not run away leaving my daughter alone,” she said.
The mother said she was grateful for the support he provided during the incident and described both youngsters as sensible.
The mother said the emotional impact of the incident continues to affect her daughter.
“She is still very frightened. She does not talk much and does not eat properly,” she said.
According to the mother, even the thought of going outside can trigger fear.
“She starts to panic at the mention of going anywhere outside,” she said.
The family said the police and district administration had supported them after the incident and acted quickly once the case came to light.
The mother also recalled meeting Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary.
She said the Chief Minister spoke to her daughter as a parent would and encouraged her to remain confident.
According to the family, Chaudhary told the girl that she could seek government assistance whenever she needed help related to her education or safety.
The girl’s father said the Chief Minister encouraged his daughter to continue her life without fear.
“He told my daughter to continue living her life openly as she had before and not to be afraid of anyone,” the father said.
The father also expressed satisfaction with the action taken by Jamui Police and the district administration.
The girl’s father said preventing such incidents requires more than police action.
“Such incidents will not stop through police and administrative action alone. Society must also become aware,” he said.
He urged people to support victims and their families instead of remaining silent.
“When such an incident happens involving a daughter, people should stand united and support her,” he said.
The incident took place on September 19 in the Marwa Pahad area of Jamui.
The victim, a 14-year-old Class 10 student, was harassed and subjected to indecent behaviour on a public road. A video of the incident subsequently circulated online.
Police said they became aware of the video on September 21, following which the girl was identified and a case was registered. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) was subsequently constituted to investigate the matter.
Three minors seen in the video were apprehended and produced before the Juvenile Justice Board.
Police also identified Hareram Yadav and Nandan Yadav as the main accused.
According to the police account cited in the report, Hareram and Nandan were located near a riverbank on September 22.
Police said Hareram was injured while officers were attempting to apprehend him. Nandan was injured by a bullet after he fired at police personnel, prompting retaliatory action.
Nandan was subsequently taken to hospital for treatment.
Hareram was produced before a court on September 23 and sent to 14 days of judicial custody.
The case has so far seen the reported arrest of eight accused. One adult accused has been sent to jail, while the minors have been dealt with through the Juvenile Justice Board.
Police are also examining the circulation of the video and taking cyber-related action against people who recorded or shared it.
The video circulating online has become an important part of the investigation because it captured portions of the incident.
Visuals from the footage show the girl appearing to plead with the accused while some people remain present at the scene.
The circulation of such material has also raised concerns about the privacy of the minor. The identity of the survivor should not be disclosed or used in a manner that could identify her.
The investigation is continuing, and the allegations against the accused will be tested through the legal process.
For the family, the immediate concern is the girl’s recovery and her ability to return to normal life.
Her mother said the girl remains withdrawn and frightened even after police action and government assurances.
The family has also called for strict action against those responsible, while stressing that wider social support is necessary to prevent similar incidents.
For now, the investigation remains underway, with the police examining the conduct of the accused, the video evidence and the role of others who may have been present or involved in recording or circulating the footage.
