RJD stages protest in Patna
The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) staged a protest in Patna against the Jamui incident and criticised the Bihar government over the safety of women and girls.
RJD women workers marched from the party office towards Income Tax Square. During the protest, demonstrators burnt an effigy of the Chief Minister.
The protesters demanded strict and swift action against those accused in the Jamui case. Party leaders also called for a speedy trial and questioned the government’s handling of crimes against women.
RJD women’s leader Nazima Jamal made a demand for the harshest possible action against the accused, including an “encounter”, during the protest. Such a demand is a political statement by the party leader and does not represent a judicial determination of the case.
The party has demanded that the authorities ensure a speedy investigation and trial in the Jamui case and take action against everyone found responsible.
The opposition has also sought greater accountability from the state government over law and order and crimes against women.
Investigation and legal proceedings remain central
With the main accused now sent to jail, the focus will remain on the investigation and subsequent court proceedings.
The allegations against the accused will have to be established through the legal process. The court will consider the evidence and arguments presented by the prosecution and defence before deciding the case.
