The man, identified as Biplob Soren, 32, son of Anil Soren of Nabagram in Murshidabad, West Bengal, was working in the laundry section of the Naval Academy as a contract worker. According to preliminary information, he had submitted an Aadhaar card and a Police Clearance Certificate while securing the employment.

Phone reportedly exposed Bangladeshi identity

The Navy authorities reportedly became suspicious of Biplob’s behaviour and kept him under observation. During detailed questioning on the morning of September 18, officials reportedly found documents and other materials on his mobile phone that indicated his Bangladeshi nationality.

Authorities suspect that he had been staying and working in India without valid travel documents or a visa while allegedly concealing his actual nationality.

The discovery has raised questions over the verification process followed for contract workers employed at strategically sensitive establishments such as the Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala. INA officials, when contacted, declined to comment on the matter.

Worked at Naval Academy for nearly a year

According to the information available, Biplob had been working in the laundry section of the academy for almost a year. During this period, he allegedly presented documents identifying him as an Indian national.

Investigators are expected to examine the authenticity of the Aadhaar card and Police Clearance Certificate allegedly submitted by him, besides determining how he secured employment at the Naval Academy and whether the documents were obtained through fraudulent means.

The authorities are also likely to investigate his movements, place of residence, entry into India and possible assistance from individuals who may have helped him obtain employment or identity documents.

The development comes days after the Kannur police arrested five Bangladeshi women for allegedly staying in India without valid travel documents and using Aadhaar cards allegedly obtained through illegal means. The police had initially arrested Selina Akter, a native of Faridapur in Bangladesh, based on information received from a Central intelligence agency. She was reportedly working at a spa near Kannur railway station. Four other women were subsequently arrested from different parts of the district based on information gathered from Selina’s mobile phone.

Investigators found that the women had allegedly obtained Aadhaar cards and were staying in India without valid travel documents. The police are investigating how they entered the country, obtained Indian identity documents and secured employment in Kannur.

The latest case involving the alleged concealment of nationality at the Indian Naval Academy is expected to bring further scrutiny to the verification of foreign nationals and the issuance of identity and employment-related documents in the district.
