World Ozone Day, observed every year on September 16, reminds the world of the vital role played by the ozone layer in protecting life on Earth from harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation. The 2026 theme, “Global action for a cooler planet,” focuses on sustainable cooling and marks 10 years of the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol.

इस साल विश्व ओजोन दिवस 2026 की थीम है: “Global action for a cooler planet” (शीतल ग्रह के लिए वैश्विक कार्रवाई)। आइए हम सब मिलकर पर्यावरण के अनुकूल… pic.twitter.com/ZORzy2Bvta

The ozone layer is located mainly in the stratosphere, roughly 10 to 40 kilometres above Earth’s surface. Around 90 per cent of atmospheric ozone is found in this region, where it absorbs a significant portion of the Sun’s biologically harmful UV radiation.

From ozone protection to climate action

The theme of World Ozone Day 2026 connects the protection of the ozone layer with the wider challenge of climate change. The Montreal Protocol, adopted in 1987, established global measures to phase out substances that damage the ozone layer, including chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs).

The Kigali Amendment, adopted in 2016, expanded this effort by targeting hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), which are powerful greenhouse gases widely used in refrigeration and air-conditioning. Its implementation aims to promote more sustainable cooling technologies while reducing climate-warming emissions. The United Nations says that fully implementing the Kigali Amendment could avoid up to 0.5°C of global warming by the end of the century, with potentially greater benefits when combined with energy-efficient cooling.

Why sustainable cooling matters

As temperatures rise and heatwaves become more frequent, cooling has become increasingly important for health, food security, livelihoods and climate resilience. However, growing demand for air-conditioning and refrigeration can increase energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions if inefficient technologies are used.

Sustainable cooling therefore means improving energy efficiency, adopting climate-friendly refrigerants and expanding access to technologies that provide cooling with a lower environmental impact. The Kigali Amendment encourages countries and industries to accelerate this transition.

Individuals can also contribute to environmental protection through everyday choices. Using energy-efficient and star-rated appliances, maintaining air-conditioners and refrigerators properly, avoiding products containing ozone-depleting substances and reducing unnecessary energy consumption can help.

A sustainable lifestyle also includes responsible use of electricity, reducing waste and choosing environmentally friendly products wherever possible. Initiatives such as Mission LiFE encourage people to turn environmental responsibility into everyday habits. At the global level, governments, industries and communities need to continue investing in energy-efficient cooling, cleaner technologies and responsible refrigerant management.

A global effort for a cooler future

The progress made under the Montreal Protocol demonstrates how international cooperation, scientific research, policy action and technological innovation can address environmental challenges. The 2026 observance places this achievement in the context of the next challenge: meeting the world’s growing need for cooling without increasing pressure on the climate.

World Ozone Day 2026 is therefore not only a reminder to protect the Earth’s ozone shield but also a call to make cooling cleaner, more efficient and more sustainable. Collective action today can help protect both the atmosphere and future generations.
