
India has joined the United States and 24 other countries in a global initiative to shape secure, open and interoperable 6G networks
NEW DELHI: Just as the world is moving towards harnessing the full potential of 5G, the script for the next digital revolution is already being written. India has now secured its place among the leading nations shaping the technological architecture of the future. India has joined the United States and 24 other countries in an international initiative aimed at making next-generation 6G networks secure, reliable, open, interoperable and competitive.
The US Department of Commerce, announcing the initiative, said the partnership seeks to ensure that next-generation networks reflect shared security interests, strengthen competitiveness and accelerate innovation in 6G. This development is particularly significant for India because the 6G race will not simply be a race for faster internet speeds. It will be a technological competition that will shape the digital economy, artificial intelligence, robotics, autonomous systems, smart industries, defence communications, critical infrastructure and data security for decades to come.
India’s participation in the initiative means that New Delhi will also have an important voice on issues related to the development of 6G, including security, interoperability, resilience and trusted supply chains. In July 2026, the US National Telecommunications and Information Administration launched a Call to Action for 6G Leadership and Security. More than two dozen partner governments joined the United States in this initiative and pledged to cooperate on secure, open and interoperable 6G networks.
The announcement of India’s participation came after a meeting between Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jitin Prasada and US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. During the G20 Innovation Ministerial, the two leaders discussed the future of 6G technology and cooperation in emerging technologies. India also emphasised strengthening cooperation with the United States in strategic sectors such as semiconductors, AI and data centres.
It is noteworthy that Jitin Prasada led the Indian delegation at the G20 Innovation Ministers’ Meeting held on 1 and 2 September in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The meeting was hosted by the US Department of Commerce and the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. Emerging technologies were recognised at the meeting as an important means of promoting economic prosperity, productivity and expanding opportunities.
5G has made mobile internet faster, opened the way for connecting machines and accelerated the expansion of the Internet of Things. The ambitions for 6G are far broader. Networks are expected to become more intelligent, with AI, sensors, cloud, edge computing and communication systems working together. Future 6G networks are expected to offer extremely low latency, exceptionally high data capacity, extensive machine-to-machine communication and more reliable connectivity.
Its impact will not be confined to mobile phones. Autonomous vehicles, industrial robots, digital twins, smart cities, advanced healthcare, defence systems and highly automated manufacturing could become major areas of application. This is why technological competition over 6G is increasingly being linked to national security and economic power. Countries or groups of countries whose companies, research institutions and governments secure strong positions in 6G standards, intellectual property, spectrum and supply chains will have greater influence in the digital age ahead.
For India, this step has not come suddenly. In March 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi released the Bharat 6G Vision, setting the goal of taking India to a position of global leadership in the design, development and deployment of 6G by 2030. Through the Bharat 6G Alliance, the Government of India has brought industry, academia and government together on a common platform to advance research and the standardisation process.
The scope of India’s preparations is continuously expanding. In March 2026, the government stated that the Bharat 6G Alliance had expanded from 14 institutions to 85 institutions. India has also articulated an ambition to secure a 10 per cent share of global 6G patents. This transformation presents the picture of an India that once depended heavily on external sources for telecommunications technology and equipment and is now moving towards developing future technologies, contributing to standardisation and creating indigenous technological solutions.
Leadership in 6G will not simply mean developing faster networks. The real power will lie in the technologies and intellectual property that become part of the world’s future networks. India is strengthening its position in precisely this direction. According to the Department of Telecommunications, research infrastructure such as the 6G THz Testbed and Advanced Optical Communication Testbed is being developed in India for 6G networks. More than 100 research proposals related to the 6G network ecosystem have already been approved.
The government’s objective is to expand India’s role across the entire technological chain, from research to standardisation and then to commercial deployment. This will also have a direct bearing on opportunities for Indian companies in global markets, patents and technology exports in the future.
The greatest feature of 6G will be its potential for multi-layered applications. Highly reliable, real-time communication between a specialist sitting in a hospital and a patient located in a remote area; automated coordination between machines in a smart factory; monitoring crops through sensors and drones in agricultural fields; and the safe operation of autonomous vehicles are among the areas where it could play an important role.
Its impact will also be extensive in education. High-quality immersive content, virtual- and augmented-reality-based classrooms and remote expertise could reach areas where access to quality services is currently limited.
The role of AI at the heart of 6G will be more important than ever. AI is also emerging as a key area of cooperation between India and the United States. At the G20 Innovation Ministerial, India expressed its commitment to strengthening strategic partnerships in AI, semiconductors, digital public infrastructure, robotics and other emerging technologies.
Future networks will go beyond simply transmitting data. They will use AI to understand network traffic, make better use of resources, optimise energy consumption and identify potential security threats. That is why the race for 6G and the race for AI will increasingly become inseparable.
The larger the digital network, the greater the cyber risk. With billions of devices, sensors, machines and systems connected, the impact of attacks on networks could also become far more extensive. This is why security, interoperability and network resilience have been given a prominent place in the US-led 6G initiative. Trusted AI has also been recognised as an important component in the development and operation of secure and innovative 6G networks.
This is particularly significant for India because the country is rapidly expanding its digital public infrastructure, digital payments, cloud services, data centres and AI capabilities. In the future, the security of all these systems will become closely linked to high-quality telecommunications networks.
The 6G partnership is taking shape amid broader geopolitical competition. The United States and its partners want trusted supply chains, open standards and secure technological frameworks to be established in next-generation telecommunications networks. The global debate over security and dependence surrounding telecommunications equipment and network infrastructure during the 5G era has made preparations for 6G equally strategic.
However, this initiative is not intended to replace existing international technology standardisation bodies. Platforms such as 3GPP and ITU-R will continue to play important roles in developing technical standards for 6G. Experts believe that the initiative’s real impact will depend on how cooperation among governments connects with existing processes involving industry and standardisation bodies.
The biggest opportunity before India now is to become not merely a consumer and a vast market for 6G, but a technology producer and standards-setter. The Bharat 6G Vision is also aimed in this direction. The Government of India seeks to achieve global leadership in the design, development and deployment of 6G by 2030.
For this, investment in research, collaboration between universities and industry, indigenous capabilities in chips and telecommunications equipment, patents, skilled human resources and greater influence in global standardisation will be decisive.
India’s participation in the 6G initiative with the United States and other partner countries is far more than a technology story. It signals a transformation in which India is moving beyond being a consumer of the global digital system to becoming an active participant in shaping it. 5G has demonstrated to India the power of fast digital connectivity. 6G presents an even greater opportunity- an opportunity to create technology, shape standards, develop intellectual property and help determine the direction of a secure digital future.
By 2030, India’s objective is not simply to launch 6G services, but to secure a decisive role in the global technological architecture that will influence the economy and security of the coming decades. The new partnership with the United States and 24 other countries is a signal of India’s growing technological stature and its advance towards this larger goal.
