Pakistani National Nazir Detained After Crossing Into India
A suspected Pakistani national was detained by the Border Security Force (BSF) after he crossed into Indian territory in the Kanachak area of Jammu on September 3. The incident took place near Border Out Post (BOP) Sohan, where BSF personnel of the 44 Battalion were deployed.
The man has been identified as Nazir, a resident of Luni village in Pakistan’s Sialkot district. His village lies across the International Border from the Kanachak-RS Pura belt in Jammu.
Following the detention, BSF personnel secured the area and took Nazir into custody for questioning. Senior officers, including the Deputy Inspector General of the concerned BSF sector, also visited the location to assess the situation.
The immediate focus of the investigation is to establish how Nazir managed to cross the International Border and whether the crossing was accidental or intentional.
Security agencies are questioning him about his identity, movements and circumstances leading up to his entry into Indian territory. Investigators are also examining whether he crossed the border inadvertently or had a specific purpose for entering India.
Given the security sensitivity of the Jammu frontier, authorities are also expected to examine whether the crossing could have any connection with attempts to assess Indian security arrangements in the area.
The detention took place in a sensitive section of Jammu’s International Border, where security agencies remain alert to possible infiltration and cross-border smuggling.
The Jammu region has a roughly 198-km International Border with Pakistan, covering areas of Jammu, Samba and Kathua districts. Security forces have repeatedly stepped up surveillance along the frontier because of the possibility of infiltration as well as attempts to transport weapons and narcotics into India.
Officials have also been monitoring the use of drones from across the border for dropping weapons, ammunition and narcotics.
The latest detention comes against the backdrop of several incidents involving Pakistani nationals along the Jammu frontier.
On March 25, BSF personnel detained an elderly Pakistani national near BOP Bhaller in Samba district’s Ramgarh area. The man surrendered after being challenged by troops. Initial questioning indicated that he may have crossed the border inadvertently, following which arrangements were to be made for his return to Pakistan after completion of the necessary formalities.
There have also been more serious encounters involving people attempting to approach the border fence.
Around Republic Day earlier this year, BSF personnel shot dead a 61-year-old Pakistani national, identified as Mohd Arif from Lahore, near Chak Majra village in Ramgarh. According to the BSF, he continued moving towards the border fence despite repeated warnings and behaved aggressively. His body was subsequently recovered near the border.
In another incident in the Jammu region, a Pakistani intruder was shot dead in the Arnia sector after allegedly moving towards the fence in an aggressive manner. In a separate case, another Pakistani national was detained in Ramgarh. No incriminating material was reportedly recovered from the person detained in that case.
