Telangana BJP state president N Ramachander Rao was placed under house arrest by police on Wednesday when he was about to leave to meet students of Government Polytechnic College at Ramanthapur. He strongly attacked Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, accusing the Congress government in Telangana of conspiring to destroy the education system and hand over valuable lands of educational institutions to real estate developers.
Rao accused Rahul Gandhi of adopting a dual stance on student issues, saying he was travelling across NDA-ruled states under the banner of ‘Chatron Ki Goonj’ to provoke students while remaining silent on the plight of students in Congress-ruled Telangana. He questioned why promises made in the ‘Youth Declaration’ prior to elections remained unfulfilled, while students in Jharkhand went on a 23-day hunger strike ignored by the leadership.
In an impromptu press conference at his residence at Tarnaka while under house arrest, Rao said he and a BJYM team had decided to visit Ramanthapur after polytechnic students invited him to address their problems and focus on GO 97, which he alleged threatened their future. The government polytechnic students had visited the hunger strike camp at the BJP office and expressed their solidarity.
Condemning his house arrest, Rao said deploying police forces around his house to block his visit reflected the “cowardice” of the Congress administration. He warned that house arrests, jail time or PD Acts would not halt the BJP’s fight for student rights.
Rao announced that the BJP’s crusade against the Congress government demanding fee reimbursement and scholarships would continue as it concerned the future of 40 lakh students across Telangana.
He criticised both the previous BRS and current Congress governments as partners in destroying the education system. Over the last decade, recruitment of professors and lecturers across 13 state universities remained stalled, forcing reliance on block grants.

Rao recalled that Chief Minister Revanth Reddy had promised Rs 1,000 crore to Osmania University a year ago but had not released a single penny till now. He pointed out the plight of school teachers lacking appointments, promotions, health cards and timely pensions, driving retired families to desperation. The Chief Minister’s admission in the Assembly that he lacked funds for salaries, he said, highlighted the government’s financial bankruptcy.
On the controversial GO 97 and the Shakti scheme concept introduced in polytechnic colleges, Rao alleged that the move would disrupt technical education and cancel ECET, pushing students away from engineering.
Rao alleged that the polytechnic system was being dismantled to grab prime lands worth thousands of crores in Masab Tank, Ramanthapur, Mahabubnagar and Nalgonda for the real estate mafia. He recalled how the Supreme Court halted overnight attempts to occupy hundreds of acres at the Central University using bulldozers.
Demanding the immediate withdrawal of GO 97, Rao termed committees involving Keshava Rao and Kodandaram on the issue as mere delay tactics.
Rao accused the Revanth Reddy government of looting public funds for Delhi while withholding fee reimbursements and scholarships. He urged Rahul Gandhi to visit Telangana and instruct Chief Minister Revanth Reddy to address student grievances immediately.
Reiterating that the BJP never uses students for political gain, Rao affirmed full support for student movements under the principle, “Student Power is Nation’s Power.” He demanded the immediate implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) in Telangana for comprehensive reforms.
Meanwhile, BJP state chief official spokesperson and Media in-charge N V Subhash said police illegally placed party president N Ramachander Rao under house arrest to prevent him from reaching Ramanthapur Polytechnic College to meet the students.
Subhash strongly condemned the preventive house arrests of key BJP leaders and workers across Ramanthapur, Malkajgiri and the Greater Hyderabad region and questioned whether there was democratic rule or police rule in Telangana state.
He said the Congress government was shaken after the success of the BJP’s two-day hunger strike, ‘Fee Arrears – BJP Struggle’, and alleged that it was therefore resorting to illegally detaining opposition leaders.
