Following her historic achievement, Squadron Leader Bhawana Kanth was felicitated by the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal AP Singh. During the interaction, the Air Chief presented her with a commemorative memento and congratulated her on successfully completing the rigorous Fighter Combat Leader qualification.

Air Chief Marshal AP Singh continues to serve as the Chief of the Air Staff of the Indian Air Force, with official government information from August 2026 confirming his tenure in the position.

Qualifying as a Fighter Combat Leader marks a significant advancement in the professional career of a fighter pilot. The course is conducted at the Tactics and Air Combat Development Establishment in Gwalior, one of the Indian Air Force’s premier institutions for advanced air-combat tactics and the preparation of experienced aircrew for leadership roles in complex operational environments.

Reports on Squadron Leader Bhawana Kanth’s achievement indicate that she successfully completed the demanding FCL course at TACDE, becoming the first woman fighter pilot of the Indian Air Force to earn the distinction. The qualification extends beyond proficiently operating a fighter aircraft, requiring pilots to develop the skills needed to understand, plan and lead complex tactical missions involving multiple aircraft, rapidly evolving combat situations and coordinated air-power operations. Kanth’s achievement therefore represents a significant progression into an advanced operational leadership role within the fighter stream.

Bhawana Kanth’s Journey of Historic Firsts

Squadron Leader Bhawana Kanth has been associated with several milestones in the evolution of women’s role in the Indian Air Force. On June 18, 2016, Kanth, Avani Chaturvedi and Mohana Singh were commissioned into the IAF’s fighter stream, becoming part of the pioneering group of women fighter pilots in the country. Their induction marked a major expansion of operational opportunities for women officers in the armed forces.

Kanth later became the first Indian woman fighter pilot to qualify for undertaking combat missions during daytime. In 2021, she created another milestone by becoming the first woman fighter pilot to participate in the Republic Day Parade. She was also part of the Republic Day 2024 flypast, further highlighting the growing presence of women fighter pilots in key operational and ceremonial roles.

Her latest achievement as a Fighter Combat Leader adds another significant chapter to this journey. From being among India’s first women fighter pilots to attaining an advanced tactical leadership qualification, Kanth’s career reflects the expanding operational responsibilities and leadership opportunities available to women in the Indian Air Force.

The Tactics and Air Combat Development Establishment in Gwalior holds a significant position in the Indian Air Force’s advanced combat-training structure. The establishment focuses on tactical flying, air-combat doctrine and preparing selected aircrew for leadership roles in challenging operational environments. Its advanced courses expose fighter pilots to complex scenarios that strengthen tactical decision-making, situational awareness, mission planning and combat leadership.

The Fighter Combat Leader course is therefore considered an advanced professional qualification for fighter aircrew. Successful completion requires more than flying proficiency, as pilots must demonstrate the ability to assess complex tactical situations and effectively employ combat aircraft as part of larger formations. For Squadron Leader Bhawana Kanth, earning the FCL qualification represents a progression from executing demanding fighter missions to undertaking a higher level of tactical responsibility.

From Fighter Pilot to Combat Leader

The transition from fighter pilot to combat leader involves a significant increase in operational responsibility. Modern aerial warfare requires pilots to assess threats, weapons, sensors, electronic warfare capabilities, supporting aircraft and rapidly changing tactical conditions. Mission leaders may also have to coordinate multiple aircraft and make critical decisions within seconds, often in highly contested airspace.

A Fighter Combat Leader is expected to combine flying expertise with tactical judgment, mission planning and leadership. Kanth becoming the first woman officer of the IAF to attain the qualification highlights the expanding role of women in increasingly specialised and demanding operational assignments.

The achievement also comes roughly a decade after women were inducted into the IAF’s fighter stream, underscoring the professional progression of the first generation of women fighter pilots into advanced operational roles.

When Avani Chaturvedi, Bhawana Kanth and Mohana Singh were commissioned into the fighter stream in June 2016, their induction marked a major development in the role of women in military aviation. Since then, women fighter pilots have taken part in operational flying, multinational exercises, ceremonial flypasts and other demanding assignments. Several milestones have followed. Kanth became the first Indian woman fighter pilot to qualify for undertaking combat missions during daytime, while Avani Chaturvedi became the first Indian woman fighter pilot to participate in an aerial exercise overseas.

Kanth’s latest qualification demonstrates that the progression of women in fighter aviation has moved beyond initial induction and operational flying toward advanced professional training and tactical leadership responsibilities.

The felicitation of Squadron Leader Kanth by Air Chief Marshal AP Singh further highlighted the significance of the achievement within the Indian Air Force. Photographs from the interaction show Kanth meeting the Chief of the Air Staff in uniform, receiving a commemorative memento and being congratulated on completing the demanding qualification.

Air Chief Marshal AP Singh continues to serve as the Chief of the Air Staff as of August 2026. Kanth’s recognition reflects the importance attached by the service to professional excellence, advanced training and the development of capable operational leaders.

Squadron Leader Bhawana Kanth’s achievement comes against the backdrop of the expanding participation of women across India’s Armed Forces. Women officers are increasingly taking up operational, aviation, technical and leadership responsibilities across the Army, Navy and Air Force.
