Guwahati: Union Minister JP Nadda, along with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, visited the flood-affected areas of Sivasagar on August 5. Union Minister Nadda and CM Sarma visited the worst-affected Nepali Khuti area on the banks of the river Dikhou. The entire village was washed away by the heavy wave of water flowing down from the hills of the Mon district of neighbouring Nagaland on July 19.
Over 15 villagers lost their lives in the sudden water rise and hundreds of cows were also swept away by the flood. Notably, Nepali Khuti was a small village of Nepali community farmers which caters the milk and milk product demands of the Sibasagar district. The livelihood of the families of the village was milk production only. The village on the banks of Dikhow river was convenient for cow farming as fresh grass was always available there. The district has never faced a flood situation in the last 4-5 decades. The flood in the rainy season never had such high intensity and was always beneficial for crops and grass. But the catastrophic water wave on 19th July ruined the lives of thousands of villagers in Sivasagar.
Boarding on a tractor both union minister Nadda and CM Sarma accessed the damage caused by the devastating flood. Speaking to reporters union minister Nadda said that the Union Government stands with the people of Assam at this crisis moment and there will be no shortage of relief and rehabilitation extended to the affected people.
“On behalf of PM Narendra Modi and the union government, I assure CM Himanta Biswa Sarma and the people of Assam that complete financial assistance is being extended to the state. The central team has already accessed the damage caused by the flood and we are fully engaged in the rehabilitation process”, Nadda said.
CM Sarma said that on behalf of the center, union minister Nadda ji assured us of full support dealing with the crisis. We ensure proper rehabilitation of the affected people, he added.
“Union Minister JP Nadda ji, who is on ground to assess the impact of floods, has assured on behalf of the Govt of India led by PM Narendra Modi ji that the Centre will extend its full support to Assam in dealing with the crisis and ensuring proper rehabilitation measures”, CM Sarma said in a X post. He informed that
Pradhan Mantri ji is closely monitoring the situation, and an Inter Ministerial Central Team has already undertaken an extensive assessment of the damages.
It should be mentioned that four upper Assam districts were severely affected by ruinous flood affecting over 7 lakhs of people and several thousand people. Over 85 people have lost their lives in the flood and thousands of people remain homeless due to the havoc caused by the flood water.
