Assam marred by severe floods
Guwahati: Assam is going through one of the most difficult times in many decades, as devastating floods are creating havoc in Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat and Golaghat district. 16 districts of the state are currently under flood water but Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat and Golaghat in upper Assam are the worst affected districts. As per local authorities, 43 people have lost their lives in the last 72 hours and over 80 people are still missing, most of them are in Sivasagar and Charaudeo district. “ There are water levels up to 10 feet in some villages in Nazira sub division. Hundreds of families are still stuck in those villages, even NDRF/SDRF teams are unable to reach those locations. These people are there and fighting for life”, said a district administration official.
As per Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) data1865 villages and around 9,53,067 are under heavy flood in upper Assam region and over 25,000 hectares of agriculture have been affected by the flood. Latest data shows that over 5000 cattle and domestic animals died or were swept away and uncountable numbers of poultry were swept away by the flood water.
As per government data, after cloud burst in Mon district of Nagaland and intense rain in upper Assam district the water rose by 435 percent above normal causing a devastating flood.
CM Himanta Biswa Sarma is visiting the flood affected areas for the second consecutive day on July 23. He is visiting many relief camps in Golaghat, Jorhat district and taking first-hand information about damage and problems faced by the affected people. Talking to reporters CM Sarma said that union home minister Amit Shah spoke to him over phone and an Intra-Minitrial central team has been sent to Assam immediately to assess the situation and report the union government.
The state government has set up 148 relief camps where over 33,614 flood affected people are taking shelter. Rescue teams have so far rescued 24,558 people from different locations. Over 200 roads in the 4 upper Assam districts have been totally damaged by the flood. 2249 houses also collapsed due to heavy current and unimaginable water levels.
RSS Swamsevak have been engaging in relief works for the last 3 days. Today, essential food items and other emergency relief items were distributed among the shelters and flood affected families in Alengmara in Jorhat. The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh is on the side of the needy

The volunteers are continuing their emergency relief and service programs in the flood-hit areas of Shivsagar district. They visited the flood-hit areas of Betbari and Amguri in the district and took stock of the flood situation. In parallel, they distributed clean drinking water, dry food items, baby food, emergency medicines and clothes among the shelters and flood affected families.
