Guwahati: No government welfare schemes for people indulging in polygamy, Assam government has made it clear. Announcing the big decision after the state budget for 2026-27 was placed in the state assembly, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “Any person involved in polygamy will not get any beneficiary schemes from the government. If any government employee is involved in polygamy, he will be dismissed from job with immediate effect”, CM Sarma said.
Any person having criminal antecedent in polygamy will also not be considered as eligible for getting the benefit of government welfare schemes. The budget placed in the state assembly on June 10 has provision for it. “It is a landmark decision by our government for women empowerment besides our welfare schemes. No person involved in polygamy will be eligible to be beneficiary of welfare schemes like PMAY, Anna Yujna, PM Kishan and many more”, CM Sarma said.
Finance minister Jayanta Malla Baruah on June 10, placed the state budget for 2026-26 in the assembly. The budget which is a reflection of the BJP’s election Sankalpa Patra aims to create 2 lakhs new government jobs in the coming 5 years. In the last five years, the BJP government successfully provided 1,64000 government jobs to the eligible youth of the state. Most importantly, not a single instance of irregularities reported during the appointments and was done completely on merit.
The first budget of the second term of CM Himanta Biswa Sarma government aims for industrial growth in the state and proposed many reforms for ease of doing business in the state. The budget aims to develop 800 kilometers of world class state highway in the next 5 years with an expenditure of ₹10,000 crores. In the health sector the budget announced the construction of 4 more medical colleges in Golapra, Hailakandi, Hojai and Bajali district.
With this the total numbers of medical colleges in the state will be increased to 28. A total of 33,000 new posts will be created in the government health sectors including doctors, nurses and allied services. In the education sector the budget proposed one district, one university, one medical college and one engineering college.
The budget also announced the creation of a satellite township near Guwahati city in a 7200 bighas of land under complete government ownership and an initial budget of ₹2100 has been sanctioned for the same to be utilised for land acquisition. The Finance Minister said that the Assam budget has grown 3 folds in the last one decade, reaching 2,00,782 crores and budget utilisation has also increased from 58 per cent to 85 per cent in the same period.
