BHOPAL: A major operation by the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) in Bhopal has put security agencies on high alert. A young man identified as Mohammad Faraz has been detained on suspicion of involvement in anti-national activities. According to preliminary findings, investigators claim to have recovered alleged jihadist literature, evidence of foreign contacts and details of suspicious online activities from his mobile phone. Authorities are now conducting an extensive investigation into his possible network, foreign connections and alleged radicalization activities.
Suspect Apprehended from Qazi Camp Area
On Friday, the ATS carried out a covert operation near Nanhe B’s Mosque in Bhopal’s Qazi Camp locality and detained Mohammad Faraz. The operation was conducted under strict secrecy, with even the local police station and several senior police officials reportedly kept uninformed beforehand. ATS officials had allegedly been monitoring his activities for an extended period and moved in after receiving substantial intelligence inputs.
Worked at a Doctor’s Clinic
According to available information, the accused was employed at a doctor’s clinic. Although he appeared to lead a normal life, his digital activities and online contacts reportedly attracted the attention of security agencies. Investigators are examining the connection between his routine lifestyle and his alleged activities to determine when and how he may have come into contact with suspicious networks.
Alleged Plans to Travel to Afghanistan
Preliminary investigations suggest that the suspect was allegedly preparing to travel to Afghanistan to receive specialized training. Authorities further claim that PDF documents containing alleged jihadist material sent from Pakistan were recovered from his mobile phone. These documents have been sent for forensic examination.
Martial Arts Training and Foreign Connections Under Scrutiny
Investigating agencies state that the accused had also been undergoing martial arts training. Officials are attempting to determine whether the training was purely a personal interest or linked to any other objective. Simultaneously, his foreign contacts, online communications and activity across various social media platforms are being examined. Investigators have also reportedly identified certain contacts linked to Deoband in Uttar Pradesh, whose role is currently under investigation.
Focus on Dark Apps and Social Media Activity
Authorities suspect that the accused may have been in touch with questionable groups through encrypted or dark communication applications. Investigators are scrutinising his social media accounts, chat history, online networks, and activities on virtual platforms. Preliminary information suggests that he had posted certain controversial and objectionable comments in support of Gaza; however, agencies are currently assessing these activities from both legal and security perspectives.
FIR Registered Under UAPA and Sedition-Related Provisions
The ATS has registered a case against the accused under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and provisions related to sedition. He was produced before the Bhopal District Court on Friday and has been remanded to custody until June 16. During this period, investigators are expected to conduct detailed questioning regarding his contacts, network, associates and activities.
Agencies Investigating Possible Network
One of the key questions before security agencies is whether the accused was acting alone or as part of a larger organised network. Investigators are also examining the extent of local support he may have received and whether attempts were made to influence or recruit other youths. Officials remain tight-lipped about the case, emphasizing that a clearer picture will emerge only after the investigation is completed.
Previous Terror-Related Cases in Madhya Pradesh
Madhya Pradesh, particularly Bhopal, has previously been associated with several terrorism-related investigations. In 2013, multiple suspects linked to the banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) network were arrested in Bhopal. The 2016 escape of eight SIMI operatives from Bhopal Central Jail and their subsequent deaths in an encounter drew nationwide attention.
Similarly, in 2022, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and ATS conducted joint operations against suspects linked to the banned organization Hizb-ut-Tahrir (HuT) in Bhopal and Indore. The accused were alleged to have been involved in radicalizing youth and expanding the organisation’s influence. In 2023, authorities also questioned several suspects detained in Chhindwara and Indore over alleged links to extremist organisations. Over the years, cities such as Jabalpur, Khandwa, and Ujjain have likewise witnessed investigations and arrests related to suspected terror activities.
