Nehru’s 72-Year Record Falls: Narendra Modi becomes India’s longest-serving elected Prime Minister

Today (June 10, 2026) marks a historic milestone in the history of Indian democracy. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has achieved the distinction of becoming India’s longest-serving elected Prime Minister, surpassing the record held by the country’s first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. Coinciding with this historic occasion, the Modi government at the Centre has also completed 12 years in office.

Modi has completed 4,399 consecutive days as Prime Minister. The previous record was held by Jawaharlal Nehru, who led the nation as an elected Prime Minister for 4,398 consecutive days- from May 1952 to May 27, 1964. This achievement not only symbolizes Modi’s long political journey but also tells the unprecedented story of securing a mandate for three consecutive terms in Indian democracy.

Nehru’s Historic Record Broken After 72 Years

Following India’s independence, Jawaharlal Nehru led the country as the head of the interim government from 1947 to 1952. However, his tenure as a democratically elected Prime Minister is calculated from May 1952, following the first general election. Nehru’s record had stood for over seven decades.

Prime Minister Modi’s record holds special significance because it represents a continuous tenure as an elected Prime Minister. While former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s total tenure spanned approximately 14 years, it was not continuous. Consequently, remaining in the office of Prime Minister for such an extended period based on sustained public support is considered a rare achievement in Indian politics.

Congratulations to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on attaining a historic milestone in public service, as today you become the longest-serving elected Prime Minister in India’s history.

Journey from a Humble Family to the Office of Prime Minister

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s political journey is regarded as one of the most inspiring stories in Indian politics. Born into an ordinary family in Gujarat, Modi spent his childhood amidst financial hardships. His father sold tea at a railway station and the family lived with limited resources. In his youth, he served as a ‘pracharak’ (full-time worker) for the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and handled organizational responsibilities. Later, playing an active role in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), he established a national identity for himself. His journey from the organization to the government is viewed today as a significant chapter in Indian politics.

Chief Minister of Gujarat for 13 years, then Prime Minister three times

Narendra Modi became the Chief Minister of Gujarat in 2001 and held the position for nearly 13 years. Under his leadership, the ‘Gujarat Model’ became a subject of discussion in national politics. Subsequently, the BJP achieved a historic victory in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, and Modi became Prime Minister for the first time. He went on to secure consecutive victories in the 2019 and 2024 Lok Sabha elections, taking the oath as Prime Minister for a third term. Securing a mandate in three consecutive general elections is a major achievement in modern Indian politics.
