As geopolitical tensions in West Asia continue to disrupt global energy supply chains and trigger panic across several countries, India has managed to maintain uninterrupted fuel and LPG supply while preventing large-scale shortages or panic buying.
In a major demonstration of crisis management, the Centre announced that more than 97 lakh LPG cylinders were delivered across the country in just two days, even as global oil markets remained under pressure due to the ongoing West Asia conflict.
The Union government on May 8, urged citizens not to engage in panic buying, assuring that sufficient stocks of petrol, diesel, and LPG were available throughout the country despite the evolving geopolitical situation in West Asia.
The assurance came during an inter-ministerial media briefing held at the National Media Centre in New Delhi, where officials from the Ministries of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Ports, Shipping and Waterways, and External Affairs outlined the government’s ongoing efforts to maintain energy stability and logistical operations.
Officials emphasised that India’s fuel supply chain remained stable and that extensive measures were already in place to ensure uninterrupted distribution of LPG and petroleum products.
The Centre stressed that there was no immediate cause for concern regarding fuel availability.
Over 97 lakh LPG cylinders delivered in two days
One of the most significant announcements during the briefing was the scale of LPG distribution achieved during the crisis period.
According to government officials, more than 97 lakh LPG cylinders were successfully delivered over the last two days against bookings of around 87.66 lakh cylinders.
The figures reflected the government’s attempt to reassure citizens that domestic cooking gas supplies remained stable despite fears arising from the West Asia conflict.
Officials also noted that online LPG bookings surged sharply during the period, touching nearly 99 per cent across the industry on Thursday.
Despite the sudden spike in bookings, authorities confirmed that no “dry-outs” situations where LPG distributors completely run out of stock, had been reported anywhere in the country.
Domestic LPG supply, officials said, continued to receive top priority.
Technology used to prevent diversion and black marketing
To ensure smooth delivery and prevent diversion of LPG cylinders during the crisis, the government strengthened Delivery Authentication Code (DAC)-based distribution systems.
Officials stated that DAC-based LPG deliveries increased to nearly 95 per cent.
The system helps verify genuine delivery recipients and reduces the possibility of black marketing, hoarding, and diversion of domestic LPG cylinders for commercial use.
Authorities acknowledged that periods of geopolitical uncertainty often lead to panic buying and illegal stockpiling activities.
To counter this, enforcement agencies launched extensive anti-hoarding operations across the country.
Government officials revealed that more than 2,000 raids were conducted nationwide on Thursday alone to crack down on black marketing and illegal storage of LPG cylinders.
The Centre said strict monitoring mechanisms had been activated to maintain fair distribution and prevent artificial shortages.
Government expands alternate fuel measures
Alongside LPG management, the government also highlighted broader efforts to reduce pressure on conventional fuel supply chains.
Officials said more than 50,400 PNG consumers voluntarily surrendered their LPG connections through the MYPNGD.in portal by May 7.
This initiative forms part of the Centre’s larger strategy to encourage the use of cleaner and alternate fuels such as piped natural gas (PNG) and compressed natural gas (CNG).
The government stated that 100 per cent supply was being maintained for domestic LPG users, domestic PNG consumers, and the CNG transport sector.
Additional measures were also introduced to rationalise supply and demand during the crisis period.
These included increasing refinery production, widening LPG booking intervals in urban and rural areas, expanding PNG connectivity, and making alternate fuels such as kerosene and coal more widely available where required.
Officials indicated that these measures were intended to create a multi-layered energy management system capable of handling prolonged international disruption.
Refineries and distribution networks operating at full scale
Government officials said Indian refineries and fuel distribution networks were functioning normally despite pressure on global supply chains.
Authorities noted that India’s energy infrastructure expansion over the past decade had played a critical role in helping the country manage the present crisis without major disruption.
The country’s refining capacity, expanded LPG storage infrastructure, and diversified import network reportedly helped prevent shortages even as shipping routes in parts of West Asia remained unstable.
India’s increasing diversification of crude oil imports from countries outside the Gulf region has also reduced immediate dependence on conflict-hit routes.
Officials indicated that supply coordination mechanisms between oil companies, refineries, and state authorities had been strengthened significantly since the beginning of the crisis.
Maritime operations remain stable
The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways also provided updates regarding maritime operations and the safety of Indian seafarers in the Gulf region.
Officials stated that more than 3,019 Indian seafarers had been safely repatriated so far from various locations in the Gulf region, including 20 repatriations in the last 48 hours alone.
The Directorate General of Shipping control room reportedly handled over 8,700 calls and more than 19,000 emails since its activation during the crisis period.
Authorities further confirmed that no incidents involving Indian ships or Indian seafarers had been reported during the previous 48 hours.
Port operations across India were also functioning normally, officials added.
This continuity in maritime logistics has been crucial in ensuring uninterrupted energy imports and cargo movement.
India continues diplomatic outreach in Gulf region
The Ministry of External Affairs said India was continuing diplomatic outreach with Gulf nations under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri visited the United Arab Emirates on May 7 and held discussions regarding bilateral cooperation and the evolving regional situation.
The government confirmed that Indian embassies and consulates across the Gulf region remained fully operational with 24-hour helplines functioning to assist Indian nationals.
Officials also said flight operations from major Gulf countries including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait, and Bahrain were continuing normally.
Partial flight operations had also resumed in Qatar, Iran, and Israel despite regional tensions.
The continuation of air and maritime connectivity has been viewed as an important factor in maintaining stability during the crisis.
Government appeals against rumours and panic buying
As concerns over the West Asia conflict continue to grow globally, the Centre appealed to citizens to rely only on official communication and avoid spreading rumours regarding fuel availability.
Officials warned that misinformation and panic buying could unnecessarily disrupt supply chains even when adequate stocks are available.
The government reiterated that India’s energy management system remained stable and capable of handling the current situation.
The successful delivery of over 97 lakh LPG cylinders within two days, combined with anti-hoarding enforcement, expanded refinery operations, and continued diplomatic coordination, has emerged as one of India’s largest logistical responses to an international energy crisis in recent years.
While global uncertainty continues, authorities said the immediate priority remains clear, ensuring that ordinary Indian households do not face disruption in essential fuel supply.
