Pune: Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar visited the family of the unfortunate Nasrapur (Bhor, Pune) rape victim on 4 May and assured the parents that the chargesheet in the horrific murder of their child will be filed in the court within 10 days. The Nasrapur case pertains to the rape and murder of a four-year-old girl in Pune’s Bhor taluka on May 1. It had led to a night-long protest on the Pune-Bengaluru highway, police baton charge, and a bandh call in the region.

“I have spoken to the Pune Rural Police SP Sandeep Singh Gill and we are on the job. Meanwhile, we hope you also take care of your health,” Amitesh Kumar said with folded hands to the affected family.

The police had managed to arrest the suspect within two hours after the missing report and the 65-year-old accused named Bhimrao Kambli is in police custody now. He also had at least two more sexual harassment and misdemeanour (one of them a POCSO case) against him but was out on bail when he committed the latest crime.

Commissioner Amitesh Kumar, during the visit to the affected family, also noted that the child’s mother look very ill, upon which he was informed that the lady had not eaten a morsel since the shocking loss came to light and had been crying incessantly while clutching the deceased child’s garments from the wardrobe.

#WATCH | Pune, Maharashtra: Pune Rural Police SP Sandeep Singh Gill says, "…The accused is a 65-year-old man who lives in the surrounding area. He lured the girl and did this…We arrested the accused within an hour of receiving information…The accused has two similar cases… https://t.co/FoW77Hx7t1 pic.twitter.com/mNO1QH0IWD

Amitesh Kumar instructed the Additional Commissioner Rajesh Bansode and DCP Sambhaji Kadam to ensure that the mother of the child be admitted to a good hospital for health check-up and treatment. The mother works in a private job and the father is a Hindu priest.

“Protesters Forced Us to Sit On Dharna, Police Did Not Mistreat Us”: Pune Rape Victim’s Family Clarifies Stand

The family of the victim had been in the midst of a dharna on May 2 afternoon and evening after the child’s body had been handed over to them after the post-mortem procedure. They had reportedly been demanding justice before the cremation of the child.

On May 4, the parents clarified their stand to the Police Commissioner. They said while they had agreed to demand for justice, they were not party to the stand-off that ensued.

They said that they were made to sit during the protest at the Navale Bridge in Pune but there was nothing such as police excesses from the law enforcement team. After negotiations with the police, the father went ahead to conduct the last rites of the child in the evening.

No Allegation of Misconduct Against Police

They also pointed out that a (fake) narrative was emerging, particularly on social media, suggesting that the police were acting unjustly or with undue force. The families rejected this interpretation, saying that while they had grievances about how the protest unfolded, it should not be turned into accusations against the police.

Request For Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam’s Appointment

The family told the Commissioner that their primary concern remains justice for their now deceased child. “Do not release him on bail at all. We want a strong Public Prosecutor like Ujjwal Nikam. Let the trial lead to such a stringent punishment for the convict that no other parent should ever suffer the horrific fate we have to bear right now,” the father told the police.

Meanwhile, the Maharashtra State Commission for Protection of Child Rights on May 4 asked the State government to appoint a special public prosecutor in the Nasrapur rape and murder case. It also asked the government to move the case to a fast-track court.
