In a shocking incident reported from West Bengal’s Howrah district, a 45-year-old Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) worker, identified as Jadhav Bor, was beaten to death on the night of May 4 in the Udaynarayanpur area. The incident occurred shortly after celebrations erupted in parts of the region following the BJP’s electoral performance.

According to preliminary information, Bor had participated in local celebrations with fellow BJP karyakartas earlier in the evening. Family members stated that he had stepped out of his residence to join supporters celebrating with colours. He later returned home but went out again to bathe at a nearby location—a routine activity, as described by relatives.

It was during this time that the attack reportedly took place.

Family members of the deceased have alleged that Bor was specifically targeted due to his political affiliation with the BJP. According to their account, a group of men approached him at the bathing spot and launched a violent assault.

“He was hit on the head with a rod,” a family member reportedly told local BJP leaders, adding that the attackers confronted him over his political leanings before the assault. The blow is believed to have caused fatal injuries.

Hearing his cries for help, locals rushed to the scene. However, by the time they arrived, the attackers had fled.

Bor was immediately taken to the Udaynarayanpur State General Hospital. Doctors, however, declared him dead upon arrival.

News of his death spread quickly across the locality, leading to panic and anger among residents and party workers. A large number of people gathered in the area, and the atmosphere soon turned tense.

Local BJP leaders condemned the killing, describing it as politically motivated violence. BJP leader Prashant Dey said that the family had informed him about the alleged confrontation over Bor’s political identity prior to the attack.

Police officials from the local station reached the spot soon after receiving information about the incident. A complaint has been registered, and an investigation is currently underway.

However, authorities have offered a more cautious initial assessment. According to police sources, preliminary findings suggest that the incident may have stemmed from a dispute between individuals who were known to each other.

The killing has sparked a fresh political controversy in the state, with both the BJP and the Trinamool Congress (TMC) trading allegations. BJP leaders have accused ruling party workers of orchestrating the attack, while no official response from TMC leadership has been detailed in initial reports.

The incident adds to the already charged political climate in West Bengal, especially in the aftermath of election results, when sporadic instances of violence have historically been reported.

As police continue their investigation, the victim’s family has demanded justice, maintaining that Bor was killed for his political beliefs.

The situation in Udaynarayanpur remains under watch as tensions linger in the area.
