The Telangana government has officially earmarked 100 additional seats exclusively for Christian minority students under the Chief Minister’s Overseas Scholarship Scheme, taking the total number of scholarships to 600 per year.

As per the memo, issued by the Minorities Welfare (EDN) Department, the decision follows G.O.Ms No.21 dated December 20, 2025. The order clarifies that up to 100 Christian minority students annually will receive exclusive scholarships for pursuing postgraduate and doctoral studies abroad.

100 additional scholarships are exclusively reserved for Christian minority students each year (over and above existing 500 seats).

The existing 500 scholarships under the scheme will continue to be distributed among other minority communities, with Muslims receiving 480 seats (96%), while Jains, Sikhs, Buddhists, and Parsis will receive 5 seats each.

The government further clarified that any unutilised seats from earlier allocations may be reassigned, primarily benefiting Muslim minority students.

The Commissioner of Minorities Welfare, Hyderabad, has been directed to implement the revised allocation.

Under the Chief Minister’s Overseas Scholarship Scheme, eligible students can receive financial assistance of up to ₹20 lakhs or as per the admission letter, whichever is less. The scheme also covers one-way economy airfare and visa charges. To qualify, the family income of the applicant must be below ₹5 lakhs per annum from all sources. The scholarship supports higher education in countries including the USA, UK, Australia, Canada, Singapore, Germany, New Zealand, Japan, France, and South Korea.

The Chief Minister’s Overseas Scholarship Scheme was introduced in 2015–16 during the TRS government led by former Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao.
