India appoints Ex Union Minister Dinesh Trivedi as Bangladesh High Commissioner; Bengal roots aid diplomatic leverage

In a rare strategic move, New Delhi has appointed Former Union Minister Dinesh Trivedi as High Commissioner to Bangladesh. His solid and prolonged political path coupled with Bengali roots will indeed render a diplomatic leverage and strategic edge in fortifying ties with Dhaka, where the bilateral relations had hit rock bottom under the interim regime led by Muhammad Yuns. The appointment of Trivedi ahead of West Bengal elections, is also deemed as an approach to consolidate national security

New Delhi has appointed former Union Minister Dinesh Trivedi as the High Commissioner to the neighbouring country of Bangladesh. This strategic move by the government is deemed as a rare gesture. Predominantly, IFS Officers with solid bureaucratic experience in the domain of foreign policy and diplomacy are appointed as Ambassadors. Thus, the decision of the government reflects deviation from the routine and conventional path while dealing with bilateral relations in the geopolitical realm. This also illustrates the vitality rendered by New Delhi to stabilise relations with Bangladesh, which was disrupted under the Muhammad Yunus interim government.

However, the long and concrete political career of Former Minister Dinesh Trivedi coupled with his Bengali roots is said to render greater strategic advantage and diplomatic leverage in strengthening ties with Dhaka. In a phase especially when both nations are aiming at rebuilding and redefining the strategic relations, post the interim regime under Muhammad Yunus, when the relations had hit rock bottom, appointment of Dinesh Trivedi is indeed seen as a precise strategic calculation to bolster bilateral ties and consolidate national security.

Dinesh Trivedi is a former Member of Parliament from the Barrackpore constituency in West Bengal. As the maiden political appointee in the neighbouring country, Dinesh Trivedi will replace diplomat Pranay Verma who is currently serving as the Bangladesh High Commissioner and is set to move to Brussels as the Ambassador of India for the European Union(EU). The official appointment of Dinesh Trivedi as Bangladesh Ambassador will commence once the BNP government in Dhaka led by Tarique Rahman gives agreement.

Dinesh Trivedi was a member of Trinamool Congress(TMC) and resigned from the party on February 12, 2021. He joined BJP on March 6, 2021. During the UPA government Trivedi was a Union Minister for Railways and also has served as the Minister of State for the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. His strong political career, vast experience and most importantly awareness of the grassroot dynamics of West Bengal will act as a major strategic proposition to reset and redefine the ties with Bangladesh and solve bilateral hiccups particularly pertaining to border regions across the state of West Bengal. This includes consolidating national security by thwarting cross border infiltration, sealing deals of mutual interests pertaining to trade, cross border river sharing arrangement etc.

Post the dismantling of the Sheikh Hasina led Awami League government as an impact of the massive student uprising in 2024, the relations between Delhi and Dhaka deteriorated to a massive extent under the interim regime led by Muhammad Yunus. In fact, Dhaka under Yunus was tilting its alliance towards Pakistan forming a nexus and was making derogatory statements against India that posed threat to the country’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and national security. Thus, the appointment of Dinesh Trivedi as the High Commissioner of Bangladesh comes at a pivotal juncture in bilateral relations, where both nations are aiming to rebuild the ruptured relations.

Also, under the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus, targeted attacks and violence against the minority Hindu community in Bangladesh spiked to a drastic extent, raising severe concerns. However, appointment of Dinesh Trivedi as Bangladesh High Commissioner reflects the strategic importance asserted by New Delhi to the relations with  Bangladesh,  as it marks a high-profile appointment. Political stability in Bangladesh helps India to accelerate its national security as it helps to yield strategic interests especially across the long-shared border. Solid and healthy relations between Delhi and Dhaka indeed aids for regional peace and stability in South Asia and in the larger Indian Ocean region.
