Guwahati, Assam: “Vande Mataram is not merely a song of emotion, but a powerful expression of Bharat’s national consciousness,” said Avneesh Bhatnagar while addressing a program organised under the aegis of the Vidwat Parishad of Shishu Shiksha Samiti Assam, under the ‘Namami Bharatam’ initiative to commemorate the 150th anniversary of ‘Vande Mataram’. The programme was attended by educationists, professors from universities, acharyas, research scholars and students associated with the fields of education, literature and intellectual discourse. The programme commenced with the lighting of the lamp before the portrait of Maa Saraswati and Saraswati Vandana.

Avneesh Bhatnagar, Akhil Bharatiya Vice President of Vidya Bharati, was present as the chief speaker at the programme. The programme was presided over by Kulendra Kumar Bhagwati, President of Shishu Shiksha Samiti Assam, while Dr. R. P. Tiwari, Vice Chancellor of Pragjyotishpur University, was present as the chief guest. Dr. Milan Rani Jamatia, Regional Head of the Vidwat Parishad, was also present on the dais.

Avneesh Bhatnagar elaborated on the background of the composition of ‘Vande Mataram’, its literary and historical significance, and its role during various phases of the freedom movement. He said that the song was not merely an emotional expression, but a declaration of Bharatiya national consciousness, which worked to carry the aspiration for freedom to every section of society in enslaved India.

Referring to various political developments associated with ‘Vande Mataram’, he said that from time to time, various discussions and controversies have emerged regarding the song, but its fundamental spirit has always remained that of national unity, cultural pride and dedication to the motherland. He said that even in the present social and political scenario, the relevance of ‘Vande Mataram’ has not diminished; rather, its inspiration remains equally necessary today for nurturing patriotism, social responsibility and cultural confidence among the youth.

Dr Ishankur Saikia, In-charge of Vidwat Parishad North Assam, said that the objective of the ‘Namami Bharatam’ programme is to establish meaningful dialogue in society on subjects related to India’s cultural, historical and national consciousness, and particularly to strengthen the sense of national consciousness among the youth.
During the programme, the educationists and students present also shared their views on the subject and engaged in meaningful discussions on the historical legacy and contemporary relevance of ‘Vande Mataram’. The speakers also emphasised the need for education based on national values and the promotion of the Indian knowledge tradition.
